My blog "Bearded Maladies" will serve to showcase new work and ideas, and display my creative process. A more organized collection of my work can be found at my website www.ilanschraer.com

In my work I explore family genealogy, the passage of time, portraiture, and the relationship and growing divide between humans and nature.

Here’s a little commission that I did recently. A variation on my Raleigh St. Clair portrait from The Royal Tenenbaums, with the head of a dog named after him! Wishing you all a happy new year 🎆

Recently finished this little portrait as a belated wedding gift for her owners! A fun little piece that took way too long to finish.

New print alert! Well reprint, actually. It’s been a long time since I’ve had 8x10 versions of this brass band beetle, and this old timey lad available in my shop. 11x14 versions of the beetle available as well. Send me a DM for details or visit my Etsy shop if you wanna go that route.

Each member of the scenic crew got to paint their own house for the members of the Old Guard in Rust Bank on the film Wendell and Wild (on Netflix now, go watch it!).

There was an enormous amount of freedom on this movie to create your own look, which was equally great and paralyzing at times. This house was especially fun for me, as I’ve had a lot of experience painting real houses to look new; I finally got a chance to make a fake house look run down. I also got to look at a ton of awesome reference photos of “haunted houses.”

One of my favorite projects on Wendell and Wild was developing the look of, and making the ice for the winter river shot in front of the burned out brewery.

Made with a two part polymer and glass micro beads for snow, the original shot was supposed to be much tighter and static, needing only about 2’ x 4’ of broken up ice. However, the shot kept expanding, and it was decided that it should be animated as well, so I eventually made enough ice to fill a 12” x 4” table, with the added challenge of how they were going to animate it without having to move each individual piece. Luckily I didn’t have to figure that out, but it was a fun problem to help solve over several weeks. Keep in mind that this is a shot that lasts only 4 seconds in the film. The same amount of work goes into every part of this film. If you haven’t seen it yet check out Wendell and Wild on Netflix.

My favorite thing that I painted for Wendell & Wild is something you absolutely won’t see in the film. So much work went into every inch of this world to make it truly believable, even just for a split second. Here’s a little newspaper box that I didn’t a while on, making it as grimy and old as I could. I even snuck in a microscopic flyer for my brother’s old band and SD legend .

My first task when I started on Wendell and Wild was to age these brewery silos. I was extremely intimidated since I came from an illustration background and hadn’t done much miniature aging except on my own stop motion short. Thanks to the help and guidance of my colleagues in the scenic department I was able to find my footing.

It was a crash course and just the tip of the iceberg as far as what was coming my way, but I’m pretty happy with the results and if you look real close you might be able to see them in the background of the brewery shot. Wendell and Wild is available on Netflix now.

Today’s the day! Wendell and Wild is available now on Netflix! Here’s a shot of me with my Covid mask safe mustache that I sported throughout production last fall, hanging in Belzer’s lair. And another that I snapped of Belzer’s hand from the studio. I’ll be posting more behind the scenes photos soon of specific stuff that I worked on for the film. Check out the movie this weekend and support stop motion animation!
