Bears have always held a special place in my heart, and are easily some of my favourite photographic subjects. Spending time with large numbers of them in Katmai NP a few summers back really illuminated their individual personalities and fishing styles. This impressive specimen liked to stand on hind legs and survey the river for salmon, while some snorkelled, others stood motionless and some aggressively chased the fish.

I’ve been fortunate enough to document and work in some of the planets wildest remaining places, often witnessing how much life depends on the richness of the sea. From the salmon forests of British Columbia, to the Antarctic peninsula, where marine mammals of all shapes and sizes feed during the summer months and penguins journey to breeding sites on land from their aquatic feeding grounds. Or even very close to home, where a large variety of species take advantage of the annual herring spawn.

It’s also estimated that half of the oxygen production on earth comes from the surface layer of our oceans that teem with photosynthetic plankton. We all depend on the health of our oceans for future survival! Check out the ongoing campaign by if you’d like to buy a print for the betterment of our seas and planet as a whole.

Like most cats, lions spend the majority of their day resting. When it’s time to feed, did you know that lionesses do the majority of the hunting for the pride? Smaller and more agile than the males, they work together to make a kill. We came across a group of them one afternoon & waited patiently for them to rise from their cat nap. Lioness portrait made in May, 2022, Amboseli National Park, Kenya.

I’m finally sharing some imagery for an amazing campaign from that has been launched by two of the most prolific conservation/wildlife photographers of our time!

Paul Nicklen & Christina Mittermeier have assembled 100 of the best photographers on the planet to create a limited edition print fundraiser for ocean conservation.

Our oceans truly are the lifeblood of our world, and without continued efforts for marine protected areas and better treatment of the planet as a whole, we face a perilous future. Luckily there is still plenty to be hopeful about, as we’ve seen incredible changes when we allow nature to recover and heal.

Moments in time from the white continent. As summer fades away, the days get shorter, the air cools and the light softens. Snow falls more consistently, reminding us of the beautiful flux that is life.

I’d love to know which images you like most in the comments!

For young inexperienced penguins in Antarctica, sometimes life comes to a brutal end in the jaws of a leopard seal. These opportunistic predators have a varied diet that includes krill, fish and birds, but are most notorious for the way in which they hunt penguins. As the Antarctic summer is winding down, young penguins with fresh adult feathers head out to sea for the first time, and the leopard seals are ready in the surrounding waters. They are the only seal species known to regularly hunt warm-blooded prey, and will even take other seals.

Chinstrap penguin portrait, Whaler’s Bay, Antarctica. Deception Island is one of the few places in the world where you can sail into an active volcano. The flooded caldera has a single narrow entrance named Neptune’s bellows, leading into a horseshoe shaped bay where one can walk along black sand beaches littered with relics of the whaling era.

Of all the incredible experiences I had during my stay in the park, this most felt like the quintessential Africa I’d always dreamed of visiting, inspired by the many books and natural history films I’ve enjoyed since I was a kid.

Standing at just over a foot and a half tall, the Southern Rockhopper is the smallest penguin species we encounter in the Falkland Islands. They live and feed at sea, only coming ashore for the breeding season, where they must scale steep cliffs from extremely exposed beaches. What they lack in stature they make up for in surfing ability!

The Antarctic spring sees penguins returning by the thousands from the sea, where they stake their claims on snowy ground and rekindle past flames or search for a new partner. Then they must wait for the snow to melt before they can begin to gather stones for their nests. Arriving in Antarctica a full month earlier than usual has been an incredible experience. The landscape still holds a pristine covering of snow, the air is colder, the light is softer. I look forward to watching the changes unfold over the coming months as the penguins’ lifecycle continues.
