Lily Chan Photography

Lily Chan Photography Lily Chan Photography is based in West Los Angeles and specializes in family portraiture, headshots, and boudoir photography. That meant that I shot film.

ily Chan Photography is a studio based in Playa Vista, California, specializing in on-location lifestyle portrait photography. LCP also offers commercial and event photography services. There's a saying in photography that it's not the camera that counts, but the photographer. Well, let me tell you about THIS photographer... I'm a caffeine-addicted, Glee-obsessed, magazine hoarding full-time mom

of two who used to be in a rock band and studied film photography in college. I've lived all over the world including Cedar Falls, Iowa; Atlanta, Georgia; and Singapore - where, YES, I chewed gum with impunity. My life is madness, but I love it, and I've taken pictures all along the way. So trust me when I say that a session with Lily Chan Photography will be unlike any other family photography experience you've ever had. For more information, please contact me at [email protected].

About Me
I have always loved photography. It started with a cheap plastic camera my mother had purchased for me from K-Mart. I was 11 years old, and as soon as I felt the sensation of that first shutter click, I was hooked. Years later, I chose to focus in photography as an art student at UCLA. I won't tell you what decade it was that I was in college, but let's just say that it was long enough ago that digital cameras were barely on the scene. Why is that so important? Well, learning how to shoot film before you pick up one of them hyper-automated, digital gizmos makes you think. It forces you to slow down and ponder every shot. There is no such thing as autofocus, auto-white balance, auto-anything. YOU are in control, which means that YOU must understand things like aperture, ISO, and light. Even more skills are picked up in the darkroom. Yes, I still use post-production software such as Photoshop, but the reason why your pictures will be great won't be because of it. When you work with a digital photographer with roots in film, you're working with a photographer whose mission it is to make every shot count. So why do I love shooting families? Well, there is something so special about shooting people, especially children. I think it has to do with the fact that children change so damn fast. Those chubby cheeks and gummy smiles are there so briefly, soon to be replaced by skinned knees and gangly limbs, which then metamorphose into broken curfews, cheap Wet 'n' Wild kohl eyeliner, and a bad attitude. Mom, if you're reading this, know that I'm sorry for everything I put you through in my high school years. When I'm not behind the camera, I'm busy picking up after my kids Benjamin (3), Calliope (1), and Vince (40).

I had the honor of photographing this lovely young lady's quinceañera last night. This was my first time attending one, and I was swept up in the warmth, love, and laughter of the loved ones gathered. Something her father said in his toast to her nearly brought me to tears: "We want you to love yourself just as much as your mom and I love you."

Happiest Birthday, Bianca!
