Let me just throw this out there Cleveland Guardians were 10.5 games out of a playoff spot at September 3rd last year and they won the division.

Can the Pirates 🏴‍☠️ do something similar.

I mentioned to someone that I honestly felt my best photo from last Thursday night might not even be one with the moon. This is the photo I was talking about. It was actually the very first shot I took that night. I had just gotten to my spot and was rushing to get the camera out and set up because I saw the Gateway Clipper coming through and didn’t want to miss it. Sometimes the shots you plan for weeks don’t work out, and sometimes the ones you barely have time to prepare for come together perfectly. The last light of the sunset hitting downtown, the color reflecting off the buildings and across the river, Point State Park at the confluence, and the Gateway Clipper making its way through the frame. I went out that night chasing the moon, but before it ever appeared, Pittsburgh gave me this. And I think this might be one of my favorite Pittsburgh shots I’ve taken.

Last Thursday’s moonrise came together about as perfectly as I could’ve hoped. From the West End Bridge, the moon rose right between the Oxford Building and PPG Place, glowing over the Pittsburgh skyline. Then, almost on cue, a Gateway Clipper came cruising down the river and added one more piece to the scene. The moon, the skyline, the bridges, and the Clipper; all in the same frame. Sometimes you plan a shot and Pittsburgh does the rest. One of those moments where everything just lined up

I’d say I strike out on moonrise shots about 75% of the time. A cloud gets in the way, my calculations are a little off, or Mother Nature just doesn’t cooperate.

Thursday night was looking like another one of those misses.

Standing on the West End Bridge, staring at the Pittsburgh skyline, I was starting to think it was going to be another bust. The moon should’ve been there… but there was nothing.

Then, all of a sudden, there it was.

That bright orange full moon appeared through the blue hour sky, rising above the city almost exactly where I had hoped.

After all the failed attempts, clouds, bad calculations, and nights that just didn’t work out, this one felt pretty damn special.

More boats. More sunrise. And a little more of the Outer Banks.

There was something about these boats sitting perfectly between the weathered tying posts at Oregon Inlet that caught my eye. The early morning light hit the boats, the water, and every bit of texture in those old posts just right.

Sometimes the best compositions are already sitting there, you just have to find the right frame.

Pittsburgh at golden hour. There’s something about watching the city light up while the Monongahela River is filled with boats, barges, and the bridges that makes this view hard to beat. The warm light hitting the skyline, the soft purple sky, and the activity on the river all came together for a couple of shots that really capture Pittsburgh. Two different compositions, same city, same evening. 📸

A quiet beach, crashing waves, and the first light of the day stretching across the water. Moments like this make it all worth it.

There’s something about Pittsburgh at sunrise that never gets old.

While I was set up at Community Days on Saturday, a lady stopped by my booth and asked if I had any shots of Acrisure Stadium. I knew I had this one from back in June; it just hadn’t made its way through the editing process yet.

That morning, I was following the light and color as it stretched across the sky and expanded directly over Acrisure Stadium. Deep blues and purples mixed with the warm glow of sunrise, with the colors reflecting across the river below.

And can you believe this was the same morning as my last photo of the Duquesne Incline? Same morning, same sunrise, completely different scene.

Sometimes the light changes quickly, and all you can do is follow it.
