Travel Photography: Porto, Portugal

Porto was the city I visited in Portugal over the summer, and had ample opportunity to explore the surrounding area for photos. Some of my favorites from the trip are in here, including a couple of gorgeous sunsets over the water. Porto was the city we visited while in Portugal last summer, and

Travel Photography: Livraria Lello & Chapel of Souls in Porto

No trip to Porto is complete without visiting two of the most famous places in the city. In one day we visited Livraria Lello which is known as "the world's most beautiful bookstore" as well as the iconic Chapel of Souls. Can you guess which place I found more spiritual?

Travel Photography: Porto Art & Photo Museums

On my last full day in Porto, I visited the two museums that were at the top of my list: Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art and the Portuguese Center for Photography. There were some incredible exhibitions at the art museum that I did not photograph because I was so absorbed in the work. However I did get a chance to walk the grounds and take photos of the art and sculpture gardens outside....

Travel Photography: Bolsa Palace in Porto

Of all the historical buildings in Porto, one of the most impressive is Bolsa Palace. Despite the name, this has never been the residence of any nobility. It is actually the home of the stock exchange in Porto, and a place where commerce flows through the country. The gilded nature of the neoclassical architecture was designed to impress visiting merchants, and demonstrate the country's wealth. This was one of the last places I visited in Portugal and I'm glad I found the time to visit this beautiful building.

Traveling within the Douro Valley of Portugal took us to some exceptional towns that are not often thought of by tourists. One of these was the colorful city of Chaves, an ancient town that once served as an important defensive stronghold near the border of Spain. But long before that, it was a place where people traveled for the healing waters of the local hot spring....

Continuing my travels in Portugal took me to Lamego, a beautiful city in the Douro Valley. Towering over the city is the Lamego Cathedral, with its stunning Baroque architecture. From the city below, you can walk a tree lined path full of statuary to the 686 steps that lead upwards to the Cathedral. Beside the Cathedral sits Portugal's oldest Chestnut Tree, thicker than it is tall and representing (to me) another type of spiritual practice older than the church....

Over the summer I had the opportunity to travel to mainland Europe for the first time and visit Portugal. My sister had already been there for some time, and did some excellent location scouting for places to photograph. Our first full day of exploration took us to Bragança in Northeast Portugal. This ancient town boasts a well maintained medieval castle at its heart, which was the focus of our journey. We walked the castle walls until sunset and enjoyed the views of the beautiful countryside.

Last summer I did a goddess shoot with my oldest sister Carolyn, the one who first brought me into the pagan ways in my youth. For her deity, she chose the ancient Lithuanian goddess Medeina - guardian of the forest, trees, and animals. Similar to Artemis in Greek mythology, and Diana in the pagan Roman canon she is a fierce protector associated with wild nature....

At the end of our trip to Iceland last spring, we returned to Reykjavik for several days to explore the city. These photos encompass several museums we visited (including the infamous Icelandic Phallogical Museum) and the beautiful public art and nature around the city. On our way back to the airport on our last day we stopped at the…...

Catching up on my social media posts as the end of the year rapidly approaches. Todays’s feature is this beautiful modeling shoot I did for my friend earlier this year. We shot in her incredible art deco house and had so much fun with these. Looking forward to doing more fashion shoots & portraits in the new year. See more on the website at emilyophoto.com
