Someone asked me, “Why not use a service like Shutterfly or Snapfish for storing my photos?”

Here’s my insight: Those platforms are not intended for preservation but as a tool for printing. They are not permanent, long term storage - guaranteed to be there in the future.

They only exist at their pleasure and for as long as they permit it. One current requirement is you must buy a print product from them every 12-18 months. If you fail to order they delete the photos. And I know they will because I’ve had it happen to me and to clients!

You might be able to stay up with that requirement for now - but what will happen if you become ill or incapacitated and you forget to order? What will happen if your kids don’t know they need to print something with these companies to keep the photos from being deleted? How will future generations get those photos?
