👋🏻 I'm Bekah
I've gained a few friends on here this year and feel compelled to do one of these intro posts if you're interested.
I have taken photos as a hobby (and as small side gig) for over a decade. Born & raised in Kansas & that's where I live.
I like a lot of things but making art, visiting cemeteries, and preserving history are the most prominent on this page. One of my goals this year is to create and share more consistently, which is the reason I've been able to find some fellow artists on here!
I feel like I haven't been super consistent lately & that's due to the fact that I work a full time job & I'm a (more than) full time graduate student right now. I don't want to rush the artistic process because that's never good so, apologies for my random backlog posts. Better late than never!
My day job is in archives and my pending masters degree is in Library & Information Science. So, the "archives" in bekahsarchive is two fold. One because this is my page and it is a quasi-archive of my work. Two because I hope to, eventually, use my knowledge to help others physically & digitally preserve their own photos and other important papers. My main side gig is a food photographer for a local high end catering company and I am known to take on portrait clients every now & then. I also recently became a member of the Oak Hill Cemetery (Lawrence) Committee, a group dedicated to working to preserve the cemetery.
I should, obviously, address my affinity for cemeteries and burial grounds.
I started hanging out in cemeteries to read during the Covid lock down era. Then, I began to appreciate the solitude and serenity of these spaces- as well as become more curious about the people in them. It's really not surprising that someone interested in archives also likes cemeteries. These are the things that remain once we are no longer here. A stone, papers, photos (if you were lucky, historically at least). All worthy of preservation & appreciation!
Whatever you believe, this life is temporary and hanging out making art in cemeteries helps me remember that. How we treat the dead says a lot about who we are as a society and I want to do what I can to ensure t
