The Heart Nebula, also known as IC 1805, is a massive emission nebula located roughly 7,500 light-years away. Its glowing clouds of hydrogen gas create the incredible red hues that give this nebula its iconic heart shaped appearance.

I captured this image under the incredible dark skies of Cherry Springs during the Black Forest Star Party this past weekend! Not only did I get to spend time photographing the universe, but I also met some amazing new friends and had an absolutely fantastic time.

There’s something special about sharing a passion for astrophotography with people who understand the excitement of chasing photons from thousands of light-years away.

The Soul Nebula, First Attempt.

This was a more challenging target for me. I went into it not realizing just how much integration time (exposure time) I would need to really bring out the details in this nebula. I captured this nebula during the week of August 22nd–28th while battling the full moon and the frequent storms that seem to have been hanging around lately.

Despite the challenges, I’m really happy with how this first attempt turned out. There’s definitely more detail hiding in there, so I’ll be adding this one back to the list for a rematch next year. Until then, I’m calling this one a win.

The Soul Nebula, also known as IC 1848, is a massive star-forming region located about 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. It spans roughly 100 light-years and is filled with clouds of gas and dust where new stars are being born.

The core of our Milky Way Galaxy, visible during the late spring and summer months, lives a dense, chaotic region packed with billions of stars, glowing clouds of gas, and at the center, a supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A.
