This is the first of five of my largest photos that I will have on display at my upcoming festivals and art shows.

This is one of my most iconic photos, "Thin Clouds at Monument Valley."

I took this one because of a client, just like many of you.

"Dave," she said, "I love Arizona, and you take beautiful pictures, but my favorite place is Monument Valley."

She proceeded to share her childhood memories of her father taking her and the rest of the family to Monument Valley.

So, I decided to take a trip to Monument Valley.

As luck would have it, I arrived while it was foggy, and the clouds started lifting shortly before the sun came up. I had the good fortune of capturing this scene while on a photography tour of the Valley. This photo ended up in the September 2022 issue of *Arizona Highways Magazine*.

Since I started sharing it at my shows at its largest size, it has quickly become one of my hottest sellers. It will likely be one of the next three to sell out because I am only printing 13 of them in sizes larger than 36 × 24".

I won't be making it up to the Flagstaff area to photograph the fall colors this year, so I've been looking back through some of my previous autumn adventures.

I came across this photograph from October 2022 that I've never shared before. I decided to give it a fresh edit using some of the techniques I've learned over the past four years.

I'm calling it "Golden Cascade."

Even when I can't get out to photograph new landscapes, it's nice to discover that there are still a few hidden treasures waiting in my archives!

October 8, 2026 - I am not doing the show this weekend in Cottonwood. I am sad about this one because Cottonwood is one of my favorite shows. But the forecast this weekend is not a good one and I cannot take a chance on my van or my camper getting stuck on these dirt roads that become muddy impossibilities to drive through. My campsite is a dispersed campsite that looks like it has had problems already this season - the ruts are deep and dry, and I can only imagine what they will look like after a weekend of rain. High in Arizona’s White Mountains, summer had not quite surrendered to autumn. Some aspens had already turned brilliant gold, while others remained completely green. A quiet dirt road wound through both seasons, beneath a sky filled with passing clouds.

I arrived looking for fall color, but what caught my attention was the transition itself - a landscape caught in the act of changing.

Field of Autumn Gold

Piggybacking off of yesterday's portrait-aligned shot of the same location. These are the surprisingly common early fall flowers of the areas in the White Mountains and the Flagstaff High Country where the monsoon rains abundant sunshine trick the flower seeds into thinking it is Spring! Their existence is often cut short by the Fall frost, though. I am glad that I was able to experience it this year.

First Day of Fall Surprise (For me)

I headed up to the White Mountains hoping to catch the aspens changing color this fall. I was a tad early, but on my way toward Greer, I was greeted by this: “spring” on the first day of fall!

I was surprised to learn that this is not all that uncommon. The combination of monsoon rains, abundant warmth, and plenty of sunlight can produce a late-summer or early-fall bloom. Though there is nothing “mini” about the size of it. These fields of flowers can be massive.

Their time is short, though. Once the first hard frost arrives, the blooms quickly disappear.

I did manage to catch some changing color in the aspens as well, but that will come later.

Note: It is probably too late to head up to the White Mountains to catch this now.

I think I’ve found my road for this season! 😊

The red dirt, the aspens in shades of green and gold, sunlight stretching across the road, and those clouds against the blue sky. So much to love about this little stretch of the White Mountains.

This is an iPhone preview. I was shooting with my Sony, too, so hopefully I’ll have something just as good or even better to share when I get home and look through the photos!

My third trip to Arizona’s White Mountains in five weeks - and I may have found my favorite campsite yet! (See the colors changing in those aspens?) Level ground, room to turn around, and tucked away among the aspens. For me, a good campsite is the first step toward a good photography trip. 😊

It’s been a pretty crazy five weeks, with a few setbacks and some stories I’ll share with you soon. For now, I’m happy to be here, watching the aspens start to turn and exploring with my camera.

I’m looking forward to bringing you some beautiful photographs of Arizona’s mountains for the coming season!

Wisp of Fire

Sometimes, the most interesting part of a sunset isn't the sun itself.

I captured this panorama with my telephoto lens near Sunrise Ski Resort in eastern Arizona. The clouds were layered across the sky, glowing with incredible shades of orange and red as the sun went down.

What really caught my eye was that little wisp of cloud rising out of the darker layers on the left. It's a small detail in a pretty spectacular sky, but it's what gave this image its name.

Nature certainly put on a show that evening!

Sunset at Sunrise

This was taken about 50 yards from my campsite for the night. The mountains in the distance include Sunrise Mountain Ski Resort — hence the title.

A thunderhead was moving from right to left, straight toward the setting sun. Watching that enormous cloud catch the evening light was pretty spectacular.

If you’ve been thinking about heading to eastern Arizona, now is a wonderful time to be in the Greer area. It is absolutely beautiful up there right now.
