Steve Weinik - Photography

Steve Weinik - Photography I decided it was time to lock down my personal profile, and create a more public page focused on photography. That's what this is.

I'm a Philadelphia based photographer and researcher. My work as Staff Photographer at Mural Arts Philadelphia keeps me busy, but I do take on personal projects and freelance assignments. My photos have been published in the New York Times, The Washington Post, National Geographic, The Guardian, Juxtapoz, designboom, Wired.com, Time Magazine, Popular Photography, The Wall Street Journal, The Sunda

nce Institute as well as dozens of other books, journals, periodicals, newspapers and on countless websites. My work (research, photography, production and on-screen) on the documentary Resurrect Dead, helped earn the movie a trip to the Sundance film festival, where it won the directing award in the United States Documentary category. I live with my family in Northwest Philadelphia, and am always seeking new and interesting projects.

For the first time ever, I’m doing something with my bird photography. I’ll be showing some of my favorites at the Cope House gallery at Awbury Arboretum this summer. In every show that I’ve done, the hardest part is choosing a name. It’s easy to get too serious, or too cute. In the end, I went for a little of each.

Go Birds is pretty self explanatory. Portraits of Patience risks pretention, but it’s also honestly descriptive. In my experience, patience of all kinds is absolutely fundamental to photography. The images I’m showing capture a few seconds of time, but thousands of hours of work. The opening will be the evening of July 10. I hope to see you there!

Slipping this show in before my eligibility as a full-time Mural Arts employee officially expires. Maybe after 18 years I can get an emeritus title though?

But anyway, I have 2 Philly bird photos in this group show. Opening is tomorrow. See you there!

Mural Arts’ employees are dedicated to serving the artists of Philadelphia. Heatwave is their turn to shine. Please join full-time staff members in celebrating their personal art practices during an
opening reception on August 8th, from 5PM-8PM. The exhibition features work by twenty-three artists, and includes a vast range of mediums, from painting, drawing, sculpture, film, photography, textiles, music, and more. Cumulatively, the work demonstrates a passionate commitment to creative expression, highlighting why these folks are dedicated to ensuring that Philly’s streets are filled with art.

Let’s cheer on those who are ALL IN and FULL TIME.

I don't use this platform too often, but am breaking that trend to announce a show opening: Come out TOMORROW, Wednesday September 28 at the Independence Visitor Center, 6th and Market Streets. We'll be there 5 to 8ish.

The show, curated by Conrad Benner of Streets Dept, and supported by my full-time employer Mural Arts Philadelphia will be on display through the month of October. Come out for food, drink, and to watch me ad-lib my way through a live conversation between myself and Conrad. The image below combines an iconic mural by Jessie and Katey, along with a small flock of pigeons.

Turned in my ballot last week at City Hall. I was maybe 30th in line. Today was 3x that. The line moves FAST if you've got everything filled out and sealed in BOTH envelopes. I waited less than 5 minutes.

Heart of a Champion, new Joe Frazier mural by Ernel Martinez in North Philly. Had to put the lift in the middle of 13th street for this. Luckily some nearby construction limited traffic.

I spent 10 minutes looking at another photo trying to confirm that this was a Yellow Rumped Warbler. Then I noticed this other photo. Note the yellow rump.
