"It's a simple shoot - you don't need an assistant."

This is something that we hear a lot during inquiry calls with potential clients. It's usually positioned as, "don't charge us extra to bring an assistant - they would be completely unnecessary!" Believe it or not, we don't bring an assistant because we like spending extra money. They are crucial to a smooth production. So here are our top 3 reasons why we think every video shoot needs to have a dedicated PA (production assistant) 🎬

💡 Loading and Setup - professional video calls for professional equipment. On a typical interview shoot, we bring 4 to 5 lights, light stands for each, 1 to 2 cameras plus tripods for each, lenses, audio equipment, and other miscellaneous production gear. That's a lot for one person to carry - especially when we arrive to locations that don't have an elevator. Not only does the PA help me carry the gear in and out, they also help me set up everything. It would take 2 to 3 times longer for setup if I didn't have an assistant with me!

📝 Staying Organized
There is a lot that goes into a video shoot - even a simple one. For our small shoots where Angela is both the producer and the videographer, it's especially important to have an assistant on hand. The PA takes notes throughout filming so we make sure every question gets answered and every idea is written down. For projects with scripts, the assistant also runs our teleprompter or acts as Scripty (script supervisor) to make sure no word is missed. This means Angela can focus on running the camera and coaching the interviewee or talent.

🚗 Last-minute Gofer
Video shoots are unpredictable. On one shoot, our talent's fake nails kept popping off every time she picked up the product we were filming! We do our best to plan for anything, but having an assistant on hand is the best preparation. The assistant is ready to go for (hence the name Gofer) any errand to handle those spur-of-the-moment emergencies.

So yes, even a simple shoot needs an assistant. But don't worry! We include a PA in our all of our on-location project rates - no extra charge!

What is the one person on your team that you can't do without?

Can you tell what I was missing on this photo shoot?

Last month I shot photos at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Here is a little behind the scenes look at the "before" and "after" for the event. I didn't have my assistant with me, so I wasn't able to get any footage of me in action.

The gear I packed for this corporate event was:

📸 Camera: an oldie but a goodie, the Canon 5D mkiv. It's the last of the D series DSLRs before Canon switched over to mirrorless. Outfitted with the battery grip, this camera can run all day.

🔎 Lenses: 24mm-70mm f/2.8. and the 70mm to 200mm f/2.8. Between the two of them, I had a good range of focal length. This was crucial because the live event had presentations on stage, and I did not want to be a distraction. Having a long lens to shoot discretely from the back of the auditorium was key.

💡Flash: my speedlite is nothing fancy, but I do love the MagMod dome and bounce. What really came in handy, though, was the Color Temperature Pro Correction Gels. The event space had very warm lighting, and flashes tend to be very blue. I popped on a gel and was able to use flash without mixing light temps.

So what was I missing? Coffee!

Most of my behind the scenes videos start with a coffee. This event was in the evening, so my coffee was long gone by I arrived on location.

What is your morning beverage of choice, and how late in the day do you still drink it?

Is your marketing video falling flat?

88% of marketers report that video has helped them generate leads (according to sellerscommerce). So what does it mean if your videos aren't bringing in the inquiries? Most likely, it's your script.

Whether it's a formal written script or just an outline, your marketing videos need to have a plan behind them. The same way you wouldn't go into a pitch without preparation, your videos need a strategy.

﹖Identify the Problem: Choose a pain point your clients have, and create a hook. Yes, your business can solve all of the problems - but let's just focus on ONE (per video). A laser-focused video means you are targeting a specific audience, and you are holding their attention.

💡 Position yourself as the solution: There are lots of ways to solve a problem, why should someone choose YOU? Explain your differentiators that make your business better than the rest.

📞 Lead your audience with a call to action: Have you ever seen a cool event on Instagram, but when you try to click on post there's no information? There is nothing more frustrating than having to hunt for what to do next. This rings true for all marketing videos. Whether it's going to a website, giving you a call, or visiting your store, audiences need to know what to do.

All the world's a stage ... especially when you bring your own lights 💡

Earlier this week I talked about all the great parts of filming in a video studio. Today, I want to talk about some of the reason to film on-location 📍

This is a behind the scene shot from a corporate conference we filmed last year. While the presentations were happening in the auditorium, we set up an interview "set" in the lounge. Because we were in a public area, we brought our smaller lights. The Aputure Amaran light panels are battery operated, meaning we don't have to run cables across busy hallways. They are small enough that they fit on light stands without tipping them over. These lights might not be as fancy our our go-to setup for in-studio shoots, but they are perfect for small or busy spaces.

The reason this project was an on-location shoot was because it was during an international conference. Corporate events are one of the few times that you have the opportunity to work with wide range of experts from all over the country (or in the case, the globe). We arrived early to setup the interview station. Then we spent the day pulling attendees into quick, 15 minute interviews. Being available throughout the entire conference meant we could capture a lot of amazing sound bites.

At the end of the day, we had interviewed a dozen people!

While I was filming interviews, my second shooter was filming the conference presentations. My photographer was taking photos, and my assistant was helping wrangle people and mic everyone. I love that my team can grow to fit the project's needs.

What was the last corporate conference you went to? What was your biggest takeaway?

“To make a great film you need three things – the script, the script, and the script.” – Alfred Hitchcock

While it's very tempting to pick up your phone and record a stream of consciousness video, that may not be the most effective way to market your business. Corporate video production is the most successful when the idea is well thought out. Even when you're not working with a formal script, having the right outline for your video will increase conversions.

So how do you write a compelling marketing script?

﹖Identify the Problem: Customers come to you because they have a pain point. Starting your video with a hook that references a single issue is a great way to grab the audience's attention.

💡 Position yourself as the solution: Now that you've identified the problem, tell the audience the solution. Hint: YOU are the solution! Why is your company the best one to solve their problem?

📞 Lead your audience with a call to action: My number one rule in marketing: make it easy for people to find you. Your video should end with a "call to action." That tells the viewers the exact next step you want them to take. Call now. Visit our website. Click the link below. Just list ONE thing you want them to do. Don't make the viewer guess on the next steps.

What's the point of renting a video studio? Isn't that just an extra expense? 💸

Unnecessary? Sometimes. Expensive? Nope 🙅‍♀️

Some videos are much better when filmed on-location. But there are times that filming in a studio is not only easier, it can also be cheaper 🤯

If you are filming a talking-head interview, a studio is the prime spot. A video studio (not a photo studio) is built with sound in mind. So that means you will save time by not having to re-record every answer because someone walked by the conference room or a phone rang on the other side of the cubicle. Offices are a great work environment, but they are terrible for recording clean audio.

Studios are also great if you want a specific setup like a green screen. Green screen shoots work best with the right lighting and the right backdrop. Wrinkled sheets and overhead lighting make for very difficult keying (aka removing the background). Filming in a studio with a built-in green screen means your editing will be easier, and the video will look better.

But Angela, you said it could be cheaper than filming at your company's office? How?

Besides saving you time (which we all know means saving money), studio rentals come with major perks. Our studio rental is only $50/hour, and includes grip gear. But the real savings comes when you hire us to film. On-location packages have a minimum number of hours, since setting up lights take a long time. But when you book one of our in-studio packages, the lights are preset before you arrive. That means we are to book filming in the studio by the hour - not by the day. For $1,000 our one-hour package includes both filming and editing. When you are looking for a quick, affordable video, our studio packages are the way to go. Learn more about them on our website!

What is your go-to video filming setup? Do you film in your office or would you prefer to film in a studio?

Is your business a ghost? 👻

In many cases, your online presence is even more important than your in-person site. I know, it's one more thing that a busy business owner has to worry about. But did you know that 76% of consumers look for a company's online presence before visiting in-person?

So how do you boost your online brand presence?

💻 Know your audience: This is key to all parts of your business, but especially when it comes to online marketing. Don't spread yourself too thin. Just focus on the few key places that your target audience lives. B2B or professional services work best on LinkedIn, while retail works great on TikTok. Make sure your online content addresses your audience's pain points in a way that resonates with them.

💻 Optimize your website: SEO is the name of the game. Websites with video receive 157% more organic traffic from search engines. Besides having a front page "about" video, your website should be rich in SEO key phrases, easy to navigate, and fast to load. All of this will boost your search engine results and help potential clients connect with you.

💻 Stay consistent: From colors to messaging, your brand needs to be consistent. Make sure your brand voice is strong throughout all of your online presence. The biggest tip that all my clients hate to hear? One social media post won't get you to go viral. You need to post consistently on your platforms. That means 3-5 times a week.

How do you find businesses that you want to work with?

T-Minus 16 days until the first World Cup game in Philly ⚽️

Philadelphia is no stranger to making history 🔔 This month we welcome soccer (or football as most of the world refers to it) fans to our amazing city. And yes, I know we get a bad wrap. But if there is anyone in the world that can understand a passionate fanbase, it's soccer 🥅

With an influx of visitors, our local businesses are hoping to see an influx in customers. But what are Philadelphia small businesses doing to prepare for the World Cup?

🏟️ Philadelphia Local Businesses Should Target New Audiences
Keep in mind the fans coming to our city. The matches playing in Philly this year include:
Côte d'Ivoire vs. Ecuador
Brazil vs. Haiti
France vs. Iraq
Curaçao vs. Côte d'Ivoire
Croatia vs. Ghana

🏟️ Ramp Up Marketing with Soccer Tie Ins
Offer game day specials, host a watch party, or offer Philly-themed takeaways so that fans can take home a piece of the event.

🏟️ Do Your World Cup Research
Extended hours, FIFA Fan Festival, and long list of various events - it's crucial to do your research ahead of time. Know all the new and temporary regulations for the month, and make sure you're prepared for a busy season!

Our blog post last Thursday was all about that ways that local businesses can prepare for the World Cup 2026. Check out our website to read more!

If you could get tickets, which game in Philly would be the one to go to?

06/05/2026

No, we are not always serious 🤷‍♀️

Yes, we are always professional. But professional doesn't mean you can't have a little fun.

We know a lot of people are apprehensive when it comes to getting the picture taken. We get it! There's a reason why we're a behind the camera. But a good photographer will help pull you out of your shell. Feeling relaxed on camera is more than half the battle. That means sometimes you have to get a little silly.

Recently we did a photo series for a writer. We tried different outfits, different poses, and yes - different props! Sometimes when you're feeling a little awkward by yourself in front of the camera, it helps to grab a prop.

If you could pick any prop to be in your next photoshoot, what would you choose? The more outlandish, the better! 🥸

GOAL! ⚽️

The World Cup comes to Philadelphia this month. With the much anticipated international event, Philly businesses are preparing for an influx of visitors. With so many new people comes opportunities to connect with new customers.

So how do Philadelphia local businesses prepare for the World Cup?

⚽️ Philadelphia Local Businesses Should Target New Audiences
Soccer fans are their own demographic. While your small business may not be soccer adjacent, it doesn't mean your audiences don't overlap. Look into the specific games playing in Philly and see how your business can better cater to those fans.

⚽️ Ramp Up Marketing with Soccer Tie Ins
This one is easy for Philly restaurants, but any business can get into the soccer spirit. Host a watch party, offer game-day specials, create one-of-a-kind Philly art, or offer local services that cater to the International crowd.

⚽️ Do Your World Cup Research
The world cup is an International, multi-week event. That means there is a lot to know. Make sure your business is prepared by researching game schedules, local events, and new regulations (like permits or extended business hours). The city will be filled with people from all over the world, so be aware that visitors may have different customs than Philadelphians are used to.
