What’s the biggest mistake I see on Instagram?

Using the exact same Profile Name as your Username. It’s redundant and you’re missing a huge opportunity to reach people who are searching for you. Your Profile Nake is typically BOT the place for your actual name, unless you’re well-known and people search for you by name. It’s not the place for your photography business name, because your local target client doesn’t yet know your business name. They’re searching “Milwaukee Wedding Photographer” or “Orange County Family Photographer” or “Orlando Newborn Photographer.”

I took the previous version of this course back in 2015 and it was a GAME CHANGER for my photography. I use what I learned in that class with every shot I take.

From my own experience, composition is one of those things you don’t know that you don’t know… If you’ve never taken a course on composition, it’s likely that you should.

In the world of subjective “science” and mis/disinformation, who do you trust? Who do you believe?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I like to think I possess a healthy dose of skepticism and one of my quirks is that I question and research everything.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve also spoken a lot over the years about “reliable sources” when it comes to Instagram advice. Just scroll back a little bit and you’ll see several mythbuster-style posts because when I first got on Clubhouse, all I heard was bad or outdated advice about Instagram.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Today, I’m going out on a limb and I’m calling out my so-called “reliable sources.” I may eat crow for this, but hear me out.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m specifically referring to the post on on August 31st: “How to Show Up in Search on Instagram,” the Instagram blog post dated August 25th, and a tweet from CEO Mosseri also on August 25th.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I realize it’s been nearly a month since these were posted, but I’ve been trying to prove whether or not the advice on how to show up in search is valid. Plus, I’m saying that the CEO of IG doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and that’s risky.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Bottomline: I’ve found no evidence that keywords and locations in your bio will ever show up in search. Try it, you’ll see. I’ve also not found any correlation whatsoever between hashtags and keywords in captions and search results. Test this for yourself! It’s not hard. Maybe these are updates IG is looking to roll out in the future, but for now, I’d disregard points 2 and 3. Point 1 has always been the case and still is.

There are times when you’ll hand over your Instagram login information. I get it - I do it too.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But you need to know which apps have this data. Swipe for instructions on how to find out.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In *most* cases, you shouldn’t have any. Most recently, I removed access to Clubhouse. They asked for my login in order to add a link on my bio. But they don’t need ongoing access to my account. I removed it, and my link still works.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On another account, I had an expired one from Walgreens?!? Maybe I printed a few pictures from Instagram at some point?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You could see TikTok (for the link in your profile - they don’t need ongoing access) and scheduling software like Planoly and Later. (More on that below and to come in Part 3).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My friend Erin said that her email provider, Flodesk had access (link in her emails) and an Instagram gallery plug-in on her website. It’s possible that one is necessary in order get a feed of all of your recent posts.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’re not using it and if it’s not important, remove it!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’re using a Followers app, remove access and delete it. You really don’t need to know who unfollowed you. If you REALLY need to know, download your data, put it in a spreadsheet and run a mismatch formula or download it again in the future and you’ll see who unfollowed you. (But seriously, give it up, you shouldn’t care... only follow accounts you love and it won’t matter.)

These third party apps that have access to your API, your login, are a major security risk and vulnerability. If they have a data leak or breach, now a hacker has your password.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
REMOVE & CHANGE PASSWORD! If you don’t change your password, they still have it....
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Scheduling apps like Later and Planoly *say* they’re “approved partners” of Instagram (and even proudly display that badge on their sites. But are they? Really?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why don’t they come up in results when I search them on Facebook’s official Partner Directory? (See last slide.)

Today, I’m posting a 3-part series on securing your IG accounts.

Having your account hacked & disabled happens a lot and there’s been a few higher profile photographers that this has happened to recently.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is devastating - whether it’s your business that you’ve built over years, growing your following, or if it’s your family’s scrollable history and photo album.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
First, let’s talk Two Factor Authentication.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I just added it to all of my important accounts. It takes like 2 minutes. Swipe to see some slides - there’s a few missing - I only had 10 spots! But I’ll send out a thorough email this week (are you on my email list?)

You have 2 options: Use an authentication app (Duo Mobile or Google Authenticator) and/or via text message. I chose to have both!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I didn’t already have Google Authenticator so I opted to download the recommended Duo Mobile. I researched it and it’s legit. The bad reviews say it’s tricky to set up and that was not my experience at all.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I enabled text messages to be sent when there’s a login attempt.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I also took a screenshot of my back up codes. I used the Markup tool on my iPhone photo editor to write the account username (I wanted to keep my 3 accounts straight) on the screenshot. I saved those 3 screenshots (3 accounts) to a folder on my phone called Instagram Backup codes. I also airdropped copies to my laptop, renamed the files for easy searchability down the road.

From the Security menu, you can also view login activity, view security emails from Instagram, see all of your data and request a download of all of your data, including all of your followers’ usernames. (I’ve done this!)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do ensure that IG has the correct email address and text number for you. Some of mine had old email addresses I can no longer access.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Also, a friendly reminder that if you’re in business, you should be actively collecting email addresses. If you lose your IG, you could have your follower data (from a certain date) and email addresses should you need to build your business again.
