It was so amazing to sit and observe this little guy in Taos NM. After some research and input from my sister who is quite the naturalist we think this is a Rivolis hummingbird (magnificent hummingbird). The Rivolis feeds exclusively on flower nectar. Scientists say the population is fairly stable but has dropped in numbers over the past few decades because of development. The best thing people can do is plant native flowers to support them. Hummers have one of the highest metabolic rates in all of the animal kingdom. This one would come every 10 or 15 minutes and would rest on top of the feeder, p*e a little , and then eat;) so cool to see into his world !

A few more mountain shots from last week’s drive through Colorado including images from Maroon Bells( outside Aspen) , Basalt , independence pass, and a few more from great sand dunes national park. It feels amazing to see these views and to feel the cool temperatures of the high country! The mountains have a calm steadiness that feels so grounded. For anyone who has asked I uploaded the images of great sand dunes from my last post to my website. Several of those would look amazing as prints! Please reach out for questions about prints of any of these images. 😃🙏

I had to stop at Great dunes National park on my way to Taos! This place is so magical. I made the hike to the top of the dunes which I did not make last time I was here. It’s a 3.5 mile hike with 800ft of elevation gain and tops out at nearly 9k ft . It doesn’t sound very hard , but considering your walking on sand and the steepness of the dunes makes it a leg/lung burner! The view from the top makes it worth the effort! Great sand dunes is such a unique otherworldly place, the way the light plays on the dunes is a photographers dream. I highly recommend visiting there if you haven’t. 😃👍

Spectacular views at the Garden of the Gods. This place is so beautiful it was hard to capture the scale and scope, but hiking through here at sunset is highly recommend! The sandstone formations are otherworldly and the vibe here is amazing. It’s good to be back in Colorado. I will be showing my work at the 23rd Aspen art festival this weekend, if you or anyone you known is in this part of the world stop by and check out all of the amazing Art :)

I captured this shot last week at sunrise in South Florida. So grateful for special moments like this. It’s important to remember that sea turtles need to surface to breathe. They are in the near shore waters rightnow to mate, nest and feed. There have been a ton of reports of boat strikes this past month, not only to sea turtles, but to manta rays and even people! Please be careful out there this weekend. Celebrating the 4th of July should be done with respect to all of the animals and people around us, both on land and sea. Have a safe weekend everyone. 🙏

A few still images from my encounter with the greens feeding on the barracuda. As cool as it was to witness, there is a cautionary tale to tell. Green sea turtle populations have rebounded in south Fl waters. At the same time sea grass growth has declined. Over the years I’ve seen many of the juveniles go from feeding on mostly sea grass to now feeding on algae, which is less nutrient dense. With the loss of their primary food source they are looking to other food sources, such as fish . I’ve seen more hooked turtles this year than ever before! If you watch the video I posted closely you will see one of the turtles in hooked on the rear flipper. Fisherman can use barbless circular hooks, switch to live finfish bait instead of squid , and contact the FWC if they hook a turtle. These small actions can make a difference. Protect what you love .🙏

I’ve been so busy this winter with art shows and other projects I haven’t been shooting as much as I would like . I just haven’t had time, or when I did the conditions didn’t line up. Ive been in the water nearly everyday the past few weeks and it’s felt so good to be back in creative mode. I love capturing images like this. The vis has been amazing with lots of turtles around. Photographers all always looking for the perfect image, that magic moment, and this was one of them! Some of it is luck, finding good composition under water is nearly impossible, you’re moving , the turtle is moving , things happen really fast, but sometimes it all comes together! Really happy with this shot. The fine details and texture of the turtle mixed with the reef and blue water background. She couldn’t have posed more perfectly :) I’ve tilted this one “perfection “. Would love to see this as a large format metal art piece!
