UNBREAKING SYMMETRY debuts Wednesday, May 27

Video : As if a Primordial State were deciding How and Why it wanted to Be…

Symmetry breaking in nature creates the infinite individual forms we see in the landscape. Unbreaking Symmetry “unbreaks” these forms using reflectional symmetry as a formal tool to reveal the hidden, fundamental mathematical order - the formulas for perfect circles, squares, triangles - ever-present as beautiful, fundamental principle within the complexity and seeming disorder of the tropical landscape.

In the modified color version of Unbreaking Symmetry, “unnatural” colors create an extra layer of illustrative distortion, allowing cognitive space for pure geometry to emerge unlimited by an immediate documentary reading, while still retaining the factual photographic record.

Delighted to share that my “Unbreaking Symmetry” series has been selected for the City of Palm Beach Gardens’ Art in Public Places exhibition opening this May.

Unbreaking Symmetry explores the hidden fundamental pure mathematical order within the seeming complexity and disorder of the tropical landscape. The symmetry-breaking which creates the infinite varieties of form in nature is juxtaposed with the underlying fundamental principle in nature of reflectional symmetry to reorganize the complexity and reveal the formulas for perfect circles, squares, triangles, ever-present as beautiful, fundamental principle and order in the landscape.

Created during contemplative walks in natural areas in and around Palm Beach Gardens, I hope these images will inspire our community to look more closely at the unifying beauty, grandeur and order ever-present in the landscape.

I’d love to discuss this work with those in the local biology or botany communities as well.

Thank you !

It’s lovely to see this image alongside so many other beautiful secrets of the natural world in the Adaptalux 2025 Macro Photography Awards gallery. It takes a great deal of patience to make these kinds of photographs, so great respect to the small but mighty band which has the fortitude to carry out the painstaking precision task of breath holding, microns of measuring and image stacking that it takes to produce a good macro image! “Small but mighty band” pun intended as all of these images are of something quite small, yet what they reveal is often quite mighty hidden truths.

The story of this image begins in a search in Naples for just the right Pinna Nobilis, those master makers of iridescent fans whose calcitic prisms act as light guides and light sensors that allow them to acutely track moving objects. This one was not perfect by any means, having born the burden of the accumulative sediment of other ocean things’ journeys, but there was something about it that held the promise necessary to spend the hours and days required to make an image of an incredibly small area of something already small. What I found when looking at it through my Laowa 2.5-5x was in a 10mm section there was an aerial view of a cliff-lined iridescent ocean.

Like many of my other images its shape tells a small story that reveals a much larger story, the larger story of the natural world whose truths reflect scale invariance, majesty, precision, cooperation, sacrifice, above all, beauty.

If you’ve made it this far, I’m curious, what do you see?

A study in beauty as altered dimensionality, form, light, mushroom, lichen and trees.

Perlumina’s light-responsive surfaces as paired with projection become luminous experiential design features which create sophisticated, perspective-shifting 3-dimensional play on 2-dimensional surfaces.

As video light-art installation works, Perlumina articulates studies in light, beauty and the expansion and freeing of dimensionality in perception. Combining scale-invariant imagery of nature and similar forms throughout the spectra of scale as moving light, these works show the natural world in a way which reveal characteristics that underly the fundamental order and reciprocal purpose woven throughout individualities in the natural world.

By also transposing the expected perception of dimensionality into a sort of extra-dimensionality, these works seek to transpose the expected into the unexpected, and to make wonder and beauty the starting point for thought and reasoning.

Installed on floors or ground, the shifting perception of dimensionality is particularly beautiful, as the expectation of solidity and surface is perceptually dematerialized. The result is a freeing of thought from fixed physical boundaries and a more expansive sense of beauty and form.

Documentation of the actual artwork is here composited into an AI-generated environment to show the possibilities for installation in hospitality, wellness and any environment where the provocation of thoughtful contemplation is desired.

Perlumina : illuming the way we see.

“Future Launchpad” from the Unbreaking Symmetry series

Pieces that repattern thought and re-imagine landscape.

Classically ornate yet futuristic, this piece becomes a bold, thought-provoking ornamental gem expounding on natural forms and transmuting them into a geometrically reconfigured landscape which is simple pattern and futuristic architectural narrative at the same time.

“Prussian Peregrine” from the Unbreaking Symmetry series

Slides: artwork details and interior design concept

The goal of the Unbreaking Symmetry series is to uncover and evoke reflection on the fundamental geometrical order in these complex landscapes and forms by restoring symmetry to their broken symmetry.

If breaking symmetry in physics is akin to the creation of infinite individuality of nature - what’s yet more beautiful to me is that the forms begin to unfold new unique individualities of form as they are re-ordered or as symmetry is layered upon them.
