I love all of my builds but this one is special (probably because it's the biggest and does whatever I want 😆).

Have a rare opportunity coming up and I needed to implement some changes if I wanted to deliver a solid product, especially since Google Earth is my main source of homework.

Mainly, I won't have the option to set GCPs and the terrain includes elevation changes up to 1500ft at its peak. So I decided the best course of action would be:

•Laser guided terrain follow up to 100M ✅️
•42MP camera with 16-35mm zoom(for last minute GSD changes in case of any terrain surprises) ✅️
•Low hanging RTK antenna for unobstructed connection ✅️

Normally gets 35-40 minutes of flight time but we'll see how that goes with a couple 1500ft climbs 😵‍💫

Did you know that thermal radiation is just another part of the electromagnetic spectrum? A simple handheld camera like this Flir C5 and other common cameras operate in mid-wave (3-5). Which is just above the visible light spectrum. Cameras used for gas detection operate in long-wave (7.5-14).

A good example of why thermal imaging can be tricky.

Needless to say, the coals on the top and bottom of this can cooker are very hot

The top and bottom section of the "middle" are most certainly about the same temperature but because of the stainless steel's low emissivity(highly reflective), it will give very inaccurate readings. This causes a reading of what is mostly just a reflection of the ambient temperature.

Yet underneath the bevel, radiation from the coals is reflected in a way that gives us more of an actual reading but is only possible because of the angle of the camera.

These challenges expand when speaking in terms of aerial thermal imaging when distance and more environmental factors are at play.

This highlights the importance of hiring a drone operator with sufficient knowledge and training of his equipment and the science behind the infrared spectrum.

Lots of testing has been needed for this rig in order to put it to work but it's almost ready!

First test flights are always a little nerve wracking....and don't normally go THIS smooth. Wish it was always like this!

As the owner of Desert SkyCams LLC, I take pride in the drones that I build and how I use them. But no matter how cool, how big, or how expensive any drone may be they are only tools.
I have two missions:
1-To constantly learn, practice, and innovate the methods used in aerial data collection to ensure you always get exactly what you need and more.
2- To continuously improve and adapt my equipment to better suit your needs
