Maybe I’m weird but… I use street photography to practice for weddings.

Street photography is typically a lot of sitting and waiting, I can’t direct people, I can’t draw too much attention to myself or the photo becomes fake.

I just have to sit and wait for moments and practice framing.

This helps with dance photos, reception photos, candid photos, and even the artistic ones that I like to take during portrait time.

Some of these photos, for example, required me to sit on the concrete behind the bench and wait for interesting compositions.

So maybe I’m weird but… it works.

I can tell you one thing though: I know how to take cool photos using a park bench and very few people have collected that merit badge.

Want more creative first dance photos? A few small changes make a massive difference:

• Leave space around the dance floor so your photographer can shoot through lights, guests, reflections, and foreground elements

• More glassware, candles, mirrors, and shiny objects on tables = way more creative ways for your photographer to use the room

• Actually move around the floor instead of standing in one place the entire song

• Build enough time into the reception so your photographer can experiment instead of rushing through moments

• Do your parent dances BEFORE your couple’s first dance. The most creative images usually happen once your photographer has already tested lighting, angles, and movement during the earlier dances

• DJs: please stop aiming lasers directly across the dance floor. They can permanently damage camera sensors. Keep them aimed at the ceiling or turn them off during key moments like the first dance.

In my humble opinion, the checkered floor is worth it.

Bonus:

3 minutes for a song is great, 1 is not enough time.

Gentlemen: Want to not look like fool on the dance floor, seem thoughtful and make planning dates easy for a while? Sign up for dance lessons with your fiancé.

Make your wedding your own.

Lance & Casey did!

They got portraits at their favorite coffee shop, married where they regularly had dates (not even a typical venue!), and specifically wanted art mixed with candids.

Her dress was a vintage, not new - but her exact vision.

One of my favorite things to tell couples: this is your day - so do what makes you excited.

What a gift it is to be a wedding photographer for creatively free people!
