Frontier or Noritsu?
This is one of the questions we hear most Both machines will give you beautiful scans—but they don’t look the same.

Frontier: punchy contrast, golden skin, a rich black point, and the only way to get borders and sprockets.

Noritsu: flatter tones, warmer greens, more room for our techs to fine-tune, and better frame-to-frame consistency.

We asked the team and it went 11 to 7 in favor of the Frontier. Not exactly a landslide.

Get Your Shutter Priorities Straight

The Pentax K1000 is so perfectly simple that it inspired one of these two new pieces of merch. “Even when it’s broken, it still works,” says developing manager Taylor about the camera. Rep a piece “the quintessential film camera” with the Dial Tee. Before you comment, yes the front says Tv, and no the K1000 doesn’t have a shutter priority mode. It’s a nod to the concept of shutter speed for ball knowers.

Have you ever metered a scene thats just a little too dark? You’re already at f/2.8 and shooting 800 ISO film—the only thing left to do is slow down your shutter speed. 1/125 isn’t enough. Neither is 1/30th. It’s risky, but 1/8 will get you there.
 
You might’ve been a little too cocky, though. The picture comes out kinda blurry. A good blurry. One that people will think was on purpose. Because it was. Right?

A brief guide to Kodak Ektar 100: the “world’s finest grain” film stock.

Ektar is known for its fine grain, saturated colors, and high contrast. This film will produce vibrant and clear images.

The stock has a red base, which means photos taken on it will have more red undertones. This can affect redder skin tones, so be mindful of this when taking portraits. It’s also sensitive to color reflection, which causes the color of the surrounding environment to reflect onto your subject more strongly when compared to other stocks.

If it’s your first time shooting Ektar, we recommend shooting at box speed. It’s best to get a feel for this film before you experiment. Don’t get us wrong, Ektar looks great a box speed—but if you want to take out some of the red undertones, rating at 200 ISO and pushing one stop in development can help with that (according to Taylor, the photographer that took the photos in this post).

Here’s why you should shoot Ektar:
• Gorgeous, saturated colors that make your photos pop.
• Grain unmatched in its fineness.
• A film open to experimentation.
