Yesterday I had the opportunity to document the first Eco Tour partnership between the Chattanooga Audubon Society and Tennessee Riverboat Company.

This inaugural trip transported goats to Maclellan Island, where they will help control invasive plant species as part of ongoing conservation efforts. These Eco Tours will provide a unique opportunity for the public to experience Maclellan Island while supporting conservation right here in Chattanooga.

With the recent security-related TFR over Chattanooga, I honestly wasn’t sure this mission would be possible. Thankfully, by working through the proper channels, the operation was approved and we were able to safely document this exciting project from above.

I’m excited to see how these tours grow and the impact they have on preserving one of Chattanooga’s hidden treasures.

Anyone flying drones around Downtown Chattanooga, North Shore, Cameron Hill, or the riverfront.

Check your airspace before you launch.

There are active Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) in the area right now because of FIFA World Cup-related activity, and some spots that people normally fly may not be available. The NOTAM states that commercial operators may apply for authorization for legitimate work, but requests must be submitted at least 72 hours in advance.

The FAA has already put out a national warning regarding World Cup no-drone zones. Violations can mean significant fines, drone confiscation, or even criminal charges.

Not saying this to scare anybody. I’m just saying don’t assume you’re good because you’ve flown there before.

Take a few minutes and check your airspace before you launch. Because a few minutes of planning is a whole lot easier than dealing with the FAA later.

Not something I ever expected to say…

A bill I helped provide recommendations on has officially been signed into law here in Tennessee.

Earlier this year, I was given the opportunity to review drone-related legislation involving schools and airspace. I appreciate that opportunity being brought to me through a local school board member, Ben Connor.

Some of the input I provided made it into the final version.

The first image shows the bill being signed by the Governor. The second image is a portion of the recommendations I submitted.

This is a cool milestone, but it also reinforces something I take seriously every time I step on a job site. Drone work isn’t just about getting good footage.

There’s a legal and regulatory side to it that most people don’t think about until it becomes a problem.

If you’re using drones around your projects and haven’t considered that yet, it’s worth a conversation.
