Getting some timelapse going on over here. I’m excited for a new space I’ve found to shoot in. It’s a room that was built inside of a building, many years ago, with the purpose of serving as a makeshift wine cellar. The walls are insulated with about 6” of insulation and of course no windows. This is perfect for this type of timelapse. No ambient light pollution and super easy to maintain a stable climate. You can see in the pictures I’ve built two copy stands to easily get the sensor plane parallel with the table surface. I’ve left the sides and front of the stands open to allow for lighting and for setting the camera up on a tripod in front of the subject (as you would more typically see) when the shot calls for it. These are purpose built from the ground up for the goals I have in mind. I have plans to add more moco as I get more of the wrinkles ironed out of this setup as it is so far. So far it's just the Stackshot being used for focus stacking on one of the rigs. Next I'll dust off the old eMotimo and try out running that with DragonFrame. Wish me luck that these two timelapses come out good. They should be done in a few short weeks 😉

Starting to experiment with some studio timelapse. Have a lot of ideas I think will be pretty cool as they begin to unfold. This is the first timelapse I shot. Blueberries drying out and beginning to rot under the heat of the light source. I was hoping they would begin to mold but as moisture is necessary for mold growth I guess they got too dry too fast for that to happen this time. And then of course a power outage stopped the timelapse before the blueberries could really get nasty. I'll invest in a battery backup soon. Stay tuned for more along these lines coming up.

PS. I focus stacked each frame of this video to gain the depth of field desired. 13 Images in each stack, times 470 frames equals over 6100 pictures taken to create this 16 second video clip!

Roly Poly, or Pill Bug
armadillidium vulgare

Despite the name "Pill Bug," these animals are indeed not insects at all. They are crustaceans. Who knew? Their main function in the ecosystem is to aid in the decomposition of dead plants and animals.

800 Kilovolts jumping between two wires. The effects of the rolling shutter kill the shot, but still kind of cool to see. Suppose I need a Phantom Flex right now. Captured at 5x Magnification.

Not a perfect image by any means, but I'm still so excited about something that I've been experimenting with that I had to share. If you haven't noticed, I've been diving into extreme macro photography. The previous images were all shot at 5:1 Magnification or less. This image is of a Crane Fly at 10:1 magnification. Expect to see a lot more and better quality (hopefully) work along these lines in the future. I'm amazed at how much more detail you can capture with the right optics than you can see with the naked eye. It's astounding.

Technical:

Mitutoyo Plan Apo .28 10x Microscope Objective mounted to the front of a 200mm telephoto lens that acts as a tube lens for the microscope objective. Image recorded on a Nikon Z7. Focus stacked 60 images to attain Depth of Field of about 1mm. Yes that's how small the fly's head is. Everything that's in focus is about 1mm deep 😮
