There was a short season in my photography career when I thought success meant more.

More clients.
More recognition.
More people knowing my name.
More proof that I was good enough.

And somewhere in all the doing I lost sight of why I started doing it in the first place. It’s crazy to think that 13 years ago I picked up a camera for the first time. I thought I was building a career but looking back I think God was building something much deeper in me.

When I found Him He began peeling back all the places where I had attached my worth to what I could accomplish. He reminded me that I don’t have to prove myself through my work. I don’t have to be the most known. I don’t have to chase success until I’m exhausted trying to earn it.

I just have to be faithful with what He’s placed in my hands. And somehow the years I feel the most successful have been the years I’ve cared the least about being successful.

Because now I get to create for something bigger than myself. I get to photograph people with a heart that knows they are already enough. I get to build a business for His glory not my identity. And maybe that’s the funny thing about surrender - I thought I had to build my career to find my worth. God was simply trying to lead me back to Him.

There are some sessions that feel like more than just a session.

For a short time I grew up next door to Oriani’s mom. I remember being the girl who would get their hand me downs, little pieces of their life that made their way to mine. I remember Kelsey and Kami in those years, never once thinking about how quickly time would move us from there to here. And somehow, here we are. Years later, I’m standing behind my camera photographing her daughter’s senior portraits.

There’s something about that kind of full circle that catches you off guard. To have once been the younger girl looking up to her neighbor friends, and now to be trusted to hold a little piece of their story in photographs. To get to witness the next generation stepping into her own life.

It just felt simply beautiful.
And Oriani? What a soul.

She plays guitar, swims for her high school team, and is taking that passion with her to college. She’s disciplined, driven, kind, and carries the kind of quiet confidence that doesn’t need to announce itself. The kind you just feel.

It was such a gift to photograph her exactly where she is right now standing on the edge of everything that comes next.

So here’s to Oriani. The girl she is right now, the woman she is becoming, and the life that is waiting just beyond this chapter.

And maybe that’s what I loved most about this session. Sometimes we spend so much time looking forward that we forget to look back. To realize how far we’ve come. How the little moments mattered. How the people who were part of our story years ago can somehow find their way back into it.

Sometimes life doesn’t just come full circle.
Sometimes it brings you back with a camera in your hands asking you to remember.

Some sessions stay with you long after you’ve put the camera away. Maybe it’s because I’m a new mom. Maybe it’s because motherhood has a way of making you see every grown adult as someone’s baby first.

We spend years looking into little faces, wondering who they’ll become. We trace tiny fingers and kiss sleepy cheeks, unaware of the roads they’ll one day choose to walk. We pray over futures we cannot yet see. We plant seeds we’ll never force to bloom. And then one day the years quietly gather themselves into a moment like this.

A son standing in his dress blues. A mother looking at him with the same eyes that once watched him take his first steps.

I don’t know that there is a pride quite like a mother’s. The kind born from years of unseen faithfulness. The lunches packed. The prayers whispered after bedtime. The tears no one else witnessed. The letting go over and over again while somehow never loving any less.

Photographing Melissa and Colin after his Marine Boot Camp graduation felt like stepping into one of those sacred moments that words never seem to hold quite right.

And as I watched them together I couldn’t help but think about my little Bo. Today he’s small enough to fit in my arms. Someday he’ll stand in shoes I can’t imagine, carrying dreams I can’t predict, becoming a man I can only begin praying for now.

Isn’t that the quiet ache and wonder of motherhood? To raise someone you will never fully get to keep and somehow love them enough to let them become exactly who they were created to be.

A big congratulations to Colin. What an extraordinary accomplishment. And to Melissa, what a beautiful reminder that sometimes our greatest work is not what we build with our hands but who we raise with our hearts.

Lately I’ve found myself drawn to the kind of light I used to avoid. There was a time when I would’ve looked at a bright afternoon and immediately wished for golden hour instead. Softer. Easier. More predictable.

Now I almost get excited when the light asks something different of me.Not because I’ve mastered it, but because it’s taught me to slow down. To stop looking for perfect conditions and start paying attention instead. The way the light falls across a face. The way it wraps around someone. The places it surprises me.

This session reminded me of that.

I photographed Jake’s senior photos years ago, and now I get to photograph the beginning of this next chapter with the two of them. We spent the evening chasing little pockets of light around the overlook, and somewhere between all the laughter and exploring, I kept thinking about how much can change simply by learning to see differently.

It had been a minute since I’d photographed a senior session, but I’m pretty sure we knocked this one out of the park. Chloe made my job easy, and this overlook of the city and rolling hills felt like the perfect place to celebrate the season she’s in.

Senior sessions always do something to my heart.

They remind me of the girl I used to be—the one who thought she had to have life figured out before she could begin living it. Standing where these seniors stand now, I couldn’t have imagined all that God had waiting for me. The places I’d go. The people I’d love. The dreams that would change. The prayers I’d watch Him answer in ways I never could’ve scripted.

The last sixteen years have held far more beauty than I ever knew to hope for.

Maybe that’s why these sessions feel so sacred to me. I’m not just photographing who they are today, I’m witnessing someone standing on the shoreline of a life they haven’t sailed yet. They can’t see what’s around the bend, but God already can.

And I can’t help but smile, knowing that one day they’ll look back at these photos and realize this wasn’t just the end of one chapter. It was the quiet beginning of a story they never saw coming.

There is a moment before almost every big family session when someone looks at me and says I’m sorry.

Sorry there are so many people.
Sorry it’s a lot to manage.
Sorry it’s going to be a lot.

And every time, I think the same thing. I have never looked through a gallery and remembered how many people were there.

I remember the way a grandfather watched his grandchildren without saying a word. The cousins who only get one week together every summer. The sibling who flew home. The empty places no one knows are coming yet. Families don’t stay the same for very long.

They grow. They scatter. They lose. They welcome. They become someone new over and over again. So when I stand in front of a family that filled the frame, I don’t feel overwhelmed.

I feel trusted. Because one day these photographs won’t be proof that everyone smiled at the same time. They’ll be proof that, for one ordinary evening, everyone was still here.

Some stories I get to witness more than once. I met Ashley years ago for her senior photos. This week, I stood behind my camera again, watching her laugh with the man she’ll soon call her husband.

She asked for something ethereal, and I knew exactly where to take them. The kind of place where the light lingers, the wind dances, and love feels a little like heaven brushing against earth.

These are the moments that remind me photography isn’t just about beautiful images. It’s about preserving the way life unfolds, one season at a time.

Baby Brooks. The kind of little eyes that look straight into your soul. Tiny toes that curl around your finger when you warm them in your hand. The soft beginning of a life that will never be quite this small.

What a gift it is to witness these first days. To preserve them for a mom and dad who are already learning how quickly time slips through open hands.

As I watch my own little Bo grow, these moments have taken on an entirely new meaning. I understand even more why we cling so tightly to photographs. They can’t slow time, but they can hold onto it for us. They become little time capsules we return to years from now reminding us of the weight of a newborn in our arms and the love that filled the room before we even realized it was becoming a memory.

I think this photo shoot just claimed the top spot on my list of the most patriotic things I’ve ever photographed. Capturing Josh asking Genevieve to spend forever with him over Fourth of July weekend while he had some time away from Air Force pilot school was the first session back from maternity leave that I didn’t realize my heart had been waiting for.

From mapping out the perfect hiding spot to quietly plotting with Genevieve’s sister and their friends, every little detail came together exactly as we had hoped. Watching all the planning unfold into one unforgettable joy-filled moment felt almost magical.

It was such an honor to be trusted with a moment that will be retold for the rest of their lives and even more meaningful to play a small part in bringing it to life before I ever picked up my camera.

Some stories are worth celebrating twice: once in the moment, and again every time you look back at the photographs. This was one of them.

I thought the excitement of becoming a mom already ran deep and then I spent the evening with the sweetest little family and somehow it grew even more.

The Mauch family has their hands full in the very best way. The second Maverick’s little feet hit the ground, he was off and running keeping us laughing the entire session while showing off his wild, adventurous little personality. Muddy feet, sandy pants, a surprise trip into the lake. Honestly, childhood in its purest form.

Baby boy number two is already so loved, and I already know Mr. Mav is going to have the most fun teaching his little brother how to run fast, play hard, and come home covered in dirt by the end of the day.
