A little mood, a lot of contrast.

Spent some time at the Smithsonian National Zoo aviary today, and these two absolutely stole the show. There’s something so mesmerizing about the stark contrast of a Male Red-winged Blackbird singing his heart out against a muted background, followed by the brilliant, dapper yellow accents of a Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Morning with Naphisa (5/9)

I had a great session with the Snow Leopard on the 9th. She was in a perfect spot to play with some shallow depth of field on that front paw while keeping the focus locked on those golden eyes.

Went with a slightly moodier, high-contrast edit to really pull out the detail in her coat. It’s always a highlight of the Zoo for me when she’s active!

Working the shadows at the Safari Park.

Another frame from my 4/30 session. The lighting at the Tull Family Tiger Trail can be a challenge with the heavy canopy and the glass, but it’s perfect for creating these moody, low-key captures.

I really wanted to pull out the textures in the whiskers and the chroma of the fur against the deep blacks of the background.

There’s an undeniable power in the presence of a Thick-billed Parrot. I captured this moment at the on 4/30, and the level of detail still blows me away-from the vibrant crimson on its brow to the intense intelligence behind that golden eye.

That “staring into your soul” feeling.

There’s nothing quite like locking eyes with a tiger. I spent quite a bit of time waiting for this specific head-on look during my trip last Thursday (4/30). The Safari Park never disappoints when it comes to these powerful encounters.

Standard edit or moody? I decided to go dark with this one to really let the natural oranges and golds do the talking.
