The Growlery The Growlery has found our new home in Oakland! Stay tuned for updates. (From 2015-2020 the Growle growlery \grou-‘ler-ē\ noun; a place of refuge or retreat.

The Growlery is a privately run artist residency centrally located in San Francisco’s historic Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Residencies at the Growlery range from one to three months. Artists live rent-free in a beautifully restored Victorian-era home and have the opportunity to work in a small, diverse group of peers. Among the Growlery’s first residents were a photographer, a graffiti artist, a

woodworker, and an installation artist. The Growlery has worked with sculptors, muralists, textile artists, and is open to individuals from other disciplines. Artists interested in a residency may propose an idea for a project, part of a larger work, or a series of pieces they intend to complete while in residence. The Growlery is currently at capacity for 2016 and not accepting applications. In addition to residencies, the Growlery has commissioned murals, sculptures, and installations, and continues to accept proposals from interested artists.

The Growlery is honored to welcome multimedia collective, 5/5ths. The Growlery has finally realized our dream of committing the entire residency to one artist collective. The exhibit opens on March 14th!

5/5ths collective is dedicated to exploring Black(ness) as an idea, consciousness, reference, & embodied experience through space, language, & visual culture.
