Over a week since photographing Monsanto and I still can’t get his sobs to stop ringing in my ears. My colleague had arranged for us to photograph him more and further tell his story, but after the wellspring of violent and hateful responses he received from the press he did get, he understandably declined further contact from the press.

It is completely understandable the degree of helplessness he has experienced when, having left his homeland to escape the threat of violence and doing everything this society would demand of citizenship, following every law towards this end up to and including being affixed with constant surveillance more fitting a criminal rather than an asylum seeker, that he has to endure more threats of violence from the citizens of “the land of the free”.
I am left with the inescapable notion that The American Dream is truly dead.

Fear & The American Dream Lost?

Following the trump administration's repeal of the protected status of Haitian immigrants, members of the maligned communities of Springfield and Columbus have received correspondence requiring they report to the privately contracted office of the Department of Homeland Security in Blue Ash, Ohio. Many had no notion that they would be required to make a decision: either immediately self deport or be shackled with ankle monitors to surveil their whereabouts at all hours of the day and night. The cuff also requires that they travel no more than 75 miles from the point of issue. It should be noted that this policy is not in response to any violation of law, and these residents are in the country legally. It has drawn an almost uniform complaint among the immigrants spoken to of being treated as criminals despite following every instruction and law in order to find their promise of The American Dream. After initial follow up with Mr. Maler where he agreed to allow myself and my colleague to further photograph him and tell his story, the notoriety and hateful comments on social media had many contact him, causing acute fear for his asylum case and ironically his personal safety, an issue that had him come to America in the first place. As a result he understandable declined further contact with the press. Such is the fear inflicted on him and hundreds if not thousands of other Haitian immigrants.

It is hard enough to raise five children without being an immigrant still learning the language. Marlene has the extra burden of discovering that her landlord had not remediated the toxic lead in the pipes in her home. While dealing with her housing dilemma, she received a letter from Homeland Security requiring her to report to their office in Blue Ash, OH to have an ankle monitor affixed, further complicating her asylum claim. She admits to being a proud woman, a hard working mother and has committed no crime, yet resents being treated like a criminal despite following all of the rules to find her American Dream in a country that, despite all of this, she has not lost faith in.
