In case you haven't seen this before... rare vintage footage of the Lilac Festival by Neil Montanus. The year was 1955. My parent's had just gotten married a year earlier and moved from Illinois to Rochester where my Dad took the job of staff photographer at Eastman Kodak, while my Mom became an elementary school teacher at School #25 in the city. What do you find most interesting about this movie? For me, it's how people dressed up - and the old Children's Pavilion, a iconic three-story, circular open-air structure designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and dedicated in 1890. It sat at the park's highest point near the reservoir, featuring a 62-foot diameter and providing panoramic views of Rochester, but was demolished in 1963 due to disrepair. A have much longer 5 minute version of this movie, if anyone is interested.

Do you remember these cardboard cutouts from back in the day? In Rochester, these would have been displayed in 'Photo shops' such as Carhart Photo, Norton's Camera, Rowe Photo, Amod's and of course Kodak. In 1966, this Kodak Summer Girl came back to Kodak Office to pose with her lifesized cardboard cut-out and visit with my Dad - who was the principal photographer for the summer girl program - and Don Elmslie, manager of Kodak displays.

I got a northern lights alert early this morning. Unfortunately, that didn't pan out, but there was a beautiful starry pre-dawn sky. And then... the sunrise happened.

Over 1000 lightning discharges this morning according to my lightning tracker and this is all I got. It could have been epic, but the heavy rain obscured most of it. And because it was mainly cloud to cloud lightning didn't help.
