It doesn’t matter if your toddler will sit still for family photos — and hopefully they don’t!

As a mom to a wiggly little 2-year-old myself, I know how nerve wracking taking family photos can be. Spending the time and money on a family session and “what if it’s chaotic and we don’t get any good photos?”

Why your kids don’t need to sit still for great family photos:
🌞 We get to capture their personalities.
The way they run ahead on the trail, collect rocks, hide behind your legs, or insist on being carried.
🌞 Connection matters more than perfection.
I’m looking for the way your daughter reaches for your hand, the way your son wraps his arms around your neck, and the way your family naturally interacts together.
🌞 Movement creates emotion.
Walking, playing, exploring, snuggling, and chasing your kids often creates images that feel far more genuine than asking everyone to smile at the camera.
🌞 There is no “perfect” behavior required.
Toddlers have big feelings. Babies need breaks. Kids get distracted. That’s all part of documenting this season honestly.

The goal isn’t perfectly behaved children.

The goal is remembering who they were.

And trust me—that version is always worth photographing.

What I remember most about Morgan and Charlie’s elopement was how thoughtful all the details of their day were.

From the start of their planning process they brought intention into how they spent their day in the North Cascades —

✨ hand-made pins of Charlie’s grandparents inside his jacket
✨ a video recording to watch of their family + friends sending them wishes and love before they said I do
✨ the small floral details on Morgan’s veil to match the wildflowers
✨ their and meals to make on a trail after their ceremony

The list went on and on. It’s days like this that I feel lucky to not only document their day, but stand as a witness to two people so beautifully perfect for one another, say yes to one another forever.

I had the privilege to take on both the photography and videography for the day — with the help of . And man, how cool was it to get to create a cohesive story of this day, while letting each medium bring out different aspects of the day.

I love the way you can see the excitement and giddiness on Emily and Scotty’s faces throughout these photos. These are their engagement photos and they quite literally can’t wait to marry one another.

And man do I love a candid, cinematic-looking photo, but I also just love some of these classic photos of them looking at the camera. I imagine them being the photos their parents print out and put up on the fridge, and the ones they may even show their own grandkids one day.

I met Carrie and Billy on a trail on a misty afternoon this Fall. I had the privilege of filming their elopement in the North Cascades a little over 2 years ago, and now here we were in an old growth forest taking photos of their family of 3!

It’s always been one of my favorite parts of being a photographer, getting to continually document couple’s milestones and watch a family grow.

I’m beginning to book out for late spring and summer family sessions, and looking forward to spending more time down forested trails, watching birds, pointing our berries and watching the sunset with sweet little growing families.
