Plantain (Plantago major) is nature's first-aid kit, growing right under your feet!

Plantain has a long history of use as a skin-soothing herb. The leaves contain compounds that are anti-inflammatory and can help calm minor skin irritations, insect bites, stings, scrapes, and small cuts.

This is why I use plantain to make a homemade salve. I infuse the dried leaves into sweet almond oil and combine that with beeswax & shea butter to create a simple herbal salve that I keep around for body boo-boos.

I took this photo a week or so ago and it's a great example of how bald eagles can turn their heads around.

Bald eagles can their heads about 270 degrees—far enough to look over their backs without moving their bodies (like here). This incredible flexibility helps them keep watch for food, rivals, and anything else happening in their surroundings.

Fun fact: An eagle can spot a fish from hundreds of feet in the air while soaring overhead. This is why you sometimes hear the phrase "eagle eyes" referring to good vision.

Wild grapes give us so much feral food! Even now, when the leaves are still growing big enough to become dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), the red tendrils still offer us food! They are tart and wonderful and make a great addition to a salad, fruit salad, omelet, or stir-fry (or just a great trail nibble)! Tendrils are packed with tartaric and malic acids, which are responsible for the sharp, tangy, and sometimes astringent flavor when chewed. (Malic acid is what makes staghorn sumac tart also!) So go find some wild grapes and eat some sour goodness!

These are the 2 beautiful eaglets in the nest in Hinsdale. You'll notice that in a few photos, one of their mouths is open and you can see the tongue. This is an indication that they are panting. Bald eagles pant just like dogs when it gets too hot outside. It was great to see that they are thriving!

Happy Pride Month! 🌈

One of the things I love most about nature is that it refuses to fit neatly into boxes.
Nature comes in endless shapes, colors, behaviors, and ways of being. That's part of what makes the natural world so fascinating.

Here's to celebrating diversity—in our communities, in our ecosystems, and in ourselves.
