[Echos of Our Roots]

“My name is Stephanie Cheng, and I’m an actor and screenwriter. My mom’s side of the family grew up in Chinatown. My grandparents’ side was based in Woodside, Queens. So I’d come to Chinatown on weekends because my grandma worked at a garment factory.

My Chinese name is Zhen Ni 真妮, and my full name is Zheng Zhen Ni 郑真妮. My grandma liked the character Zhen, and she also liked the way my name sounded next to my sisters’—Fu Ni and An Ni. She chose the names to flow together.

She was the one who gave me my Chinese name. I think it was so we could attend Chinese school and have something simple. She only had one year of formal education in China and barely knows any characters, so she chose what she knew.”
