Sy Rubin Photography Sy Rubin (1931-2002) was an American documentary street photographer based in NYC. His works are in galleries and museum collections around the world.

Sy Rubin (1931-2002), was an American documentary street photographer whose work is in museums, galleries and private collections around he world. Born in The Bronx, his work covers the span from the late 1960s to his death in 2002. After studying with Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, LIsette Model and others, he embarked on a career documenting everyday life in New York City, Cuba and other places.

Selfies via Film, ca. Mesozoic Era

Happy Father’s Day to Sy, in the Great Darkroom in the Sky. He had a great sense of humor and loved stopping into photobooths in penny arcades, drug stores or subways around the world. For you kids, you used to have to go to an arcade to play video games or pinball, and these were how you did selfies - with FILM, not phones. Sy himself cut off one image from each strip and mounted them to the page and had this hanging in his West Village apartment.
