Blue, Black, Red with white.

But can you really ever have too much of a good thing? My new studio space has been giving me a much needed inspiration boost lately. It's old and quirky, filled with the best and most random things. But most of all, it has beautiful light and incredible textures.

The last two years have been rough, to put it lightly. I've been scrambling to pick up the pieces after a business partnership ended poorly and I was left with a financial mess. But I've been finding my balance again, slowly.

One of my saving graces has been taking the time to do these creative days with only a rough idea, a pile of things, and a bottle of wine. We collaborate on nearly everything we shoot. It's always a fun day and I always end up with a folder full of images to explore with in post. I like to let the image and what I'm thinking and feeling tell me what it wants to be. Something that is mostly lost in today's commercial environment of fast and evergreen content. It's helped me slow back down and remember to make content for myself. I often have have several different versions of an image. Each one able to stand alone from it's siblings. But the real test for me is if it draws me back in after time has passed. A reminder that the client isn't always right and that budgets and marketing aren't the real foundations of creativity.

never gets old. And all of these rolling hills of greenery will be fleeting. The hills off in the far distance are actually across the Columbia River in Washington. And if you look closely you'll see that even the early spring ๐ŸŒ„ is beginning to lightly brown the tall grasses. The foreground of rolling hills of wheat are on the Oregon side of the river.
I love the patchwork of lights and dark the clouds we're providing. It made for some very beautiful gradations amongst the different shades of green. I'm practicing for a secret project ๐Ÿคซ.. it hasn't been approved and is still in it's infancy but would be pretty awesome if it all comes together. Next I'll be shooting some livestock on a friend's property. Which reminds me.. I'm always looking for new places to shoot and fun projects to try. So any ideas or future collaborators are always welcome to hit me up!! .

I've been trying to make more images for myself. Unfortunately after 15 years of shooting I have very little to show that I think actually embodies me and my creativity. And that's okay. Commercial work is about parameters, collaboration, marketing, budgets, conflicting points of view and most of all... managing all of that into a productive 10hr day with images that sell. Whether it's an idea or product.

But sometimes it's nice to just create for the sake of getting it out of your mind and out into the world. One of my favorite persons to collaborate with is she's got more talent in her pinky than I could hope to have. Some people just get it, and well... she's part of that members only club... Cool jacket and all.

We were out of ๐Ÿฅš, so
and I improvised and we dyed her instead! Was a super fun day playing around with an airbrush and some I'm no pro but but I'm always down to try new things. Also, the bravery award goes to Sarah for letting me loose on her with an airbrush! ๐Ÿ†
Sidenote: Ever noticed than Instagram dulls you colors? Pretty sure it's so that you feel compelled to use their filters. ๐Ÿ™„

Just a quick shot of some product I had lying around. I found the dried flowers on the floor in another part of my studio space.

This a 2 second exposure at iso 100 f/16 using just window light. Diffused and bounced using a gold reflector, mirror, a white v flat, and some diffusion material I have in bulk. The exposure is long enough I'm actually painting with light using a large bendy mirror.

Normally this would be the starting point for me. I can already see little tweaks I would make just in the product positioning. Such as rotating the compacts so the mirror inside the clamshell lid reflects a more flattering section of the pressed powder. I'd also add about 3 more small mirrors to reflect a harder light that could interact with product to create more shadow/highlight playfulness.

Commercial photography has a different set of parameters than social media. So if this were to be used for an ad, I'd do a breakdown shoot the entire set. This would be so I had every product in perfect focus as well as in full view. This would give me the ability to move every piece in the shot individually after creating my master file in Photoshop with every product and prop silo'd out and on it's own layer including separate layers for the original image and another for the foreground/shadows.

This would be just the starting point. ๐Ÿ˜‚

It's how most retouchers properly set up their file. It's easily an 8hr day of work. Then the actual retouching begins.
.. But it's also just a pretty shot with absolutely no retouching as you see here. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

This image was from a recent creative exploration day with the team at ANDY LIF Jewelry This particular shot doesn't feature the earring but I did love the overall feel of it. Swipe for a better look at the wonderful works of art Andy creates.
