Well it's certainly no easy feat. Not only are they extremely cumbersome and usually weigh almost 30 pounds. You also need to lug along their wigs, outfits, stands, various limbs for different poses, and in Suzanne's case you ALSO need to bring all your camera and lighting equipment. ⁠⠀

This is what we mean when we say we were drawn to Suzanne for her dedication. It's admirable and the effort and care put into each photo is clear in the art itself.⁠⠀

Ever thought about how hard it is to travel with mannequins?

Well it's certainly no easy feat. Not only are they extremely cumbersome and usually weigh almost 30 pounds. You also need to lug along their wigs, outfits, stands, various limbs for different poses, and in Suzanne's case you ALSO need to bring all your camera and lighting equipment.

This is what we mean when we say we were drawn to Suzanne for her dedication. It's admirable and the effort and care put into each photo is clear in the art itself.

When she realized she didn’t want to find the perfect man with whom to build a perfect life, photographer Suzanne Heintz staged her own—with mannequins. Wielding the camera as a weapon against conformity and suffocating gender roles, Heintz used her outrageous self-portraits with metaphorical husband Chauncey, and daughter, Mary Margaret, to explode the myth of the idyllic all-American family. ⁠

Raw and cheeky, “Imitating Life: The Audacity of Suzanne Heintz,” takes us into the irreverent, satirical and very funny mind of a unique and subversive artist. IMITATING LIFE premiered at Cinépolis Chelsea to a Sold Out crowd on November 10, 2019 at DOCNYC, the largest documentary film festival in North America.⁠

In the behind the scenes of the image on the left that we feature in the film, Suzanne talks about her boxes of mannequin arms.

One pair she holds up and explains, Chauncey's arms were straight down, so she had to get them sent out to be broken and re-molded into bent arms SPECIFICALLY for this dance and this photo.
