JUSTINE KURLAND and MAYITA MENDEZ will lead this three-day workshop where artists will collectively photograph one another in outdoor spaces, putting theory into practice and demonstrating photography’s inherent collaborative, relational, and performative underpinnings. The concept is inspired by Ovular– feminist empowerment workshops held in the early 80’s where photography was used as a tool of self representation and self-possession. During this immersive sun up ‘til sun down workshop, participants will be prompted to stage photographs and to be photographed while photographing. All individual work made during the workshop will belong to the collective as a whole.

My incredible father left this earthly plane on Sunday. My mother and I held his hand and surrounded him with love. He leaves behind a legacy of service. As his dear friend says “he became a world authority in AIDS in children when AIDS was a death sentence because there was no cure. He went to Washington to support policies and create protocols to fight this disease and he did it with humility and without arrogance or drama.”
When he retired from medicine he took that passion for life and with his vision we revived the coffee farms, built a coffee mill and worked tirelessly with all the farm workers. They adored him because he treated them as equals with respect and dignity.
As a father, I can only say that I lost my best friend and mentor, my shining light, my adamant supporter, my sweet Papi. He was brilliant and humble and so so funny. I will carry the grace of his presence to the best of my ability. Te quiero mi papi lindo.
