— support these local artist siblings known for their hand-painted signs! Their 2021 calendar already sold out, but they continue to add new tshirts, special edition prints, and other goodies on their website. (Link in their bio.) Or you can even commission a unique sign of your very own!

Another unique idea from the — buy a gift card from ! In more normal years they offer in-person food tours of Jackson Heights (and elsewhere in nyc). Gift cards purchased now can be used for summer 2021 tours. Also, check out their own post, with a great nyc food gift guide for shipping to out-of-town family/friends.

This holiday season, give the gift of an iconic NYC meal to someone you care about, near or far! [LINK IN BIO]

Our holiday gift guide looks a little different this year. Instead of featuring products, we are highlighting shippable classic NYC foods and only-in-NY food experiences that transport your giftee while supporting a small local business.

Before you consider these delicious gifts, though, I urge you to think even more locally about buying gift cards for your favorite neighborhood restaurant, or coffee shop, wine store, cheesemonger, bakery. Those places don’t have the ability to ship nationwide, and they need the help more than ever this winter. (Amazon does not!)

Please share and spread the word about how we can support iconic NYC food institutions this holiday season! And let us know what we are missing here—I capped the list at 10 for now, but am happy to add more.

One of the highlights of a rough year has been opening up for business. They sell both used books on their IG page, (with free delivery in the neighborhood), and new books on their website via bookshop. Proceeds from all sales go towards local JH nonprofits AND opening up a storefront in the area. I always dream about living near a real live bookstore, and I hope this dream can come true in 2021. Until then, keep buying your books here! An added bonus: they added a Holiday Buying Guide on their website last week if you need some unique gift ideas!

Local soap from .nyc! Some for gifts, some for me. If you’re lucky enough to live in Jackson Heights, you can even schedule a pickup time instead of getting it shipped, which makes it feel extra special.

From the Jackson Heights Gift Guide: the biggest surprise for me when compiling the list was finding out that was so local! I learned about the company in the spring, when our friend and quarantine roommate bought a bunch of spices during the first months of the pandemic. I then bought a gift set for my brother as a housewarming present and of course had to order some more for when we returned to our apartment. I really want to try the Floyd Cardoz masala set next.

That being said, I have a small project I'm working on as we head into Thanksgiving and beyond. I want to help encourage my Jackson Heights and Queens community to shop local this year. I'm in the process of putting together a gift guide to share with the neighborhood. Do you know a local jewelry maker, artist, baker, handyperson, hairstylist, instructor, who would like to be included somehow? I'm looking for people who offer gift cards for services, or anything available to purchase online. Send me links if you have any. I'm hoping to have a version ready to share early this week.

If you have the ability, time, and interest to sew cloth masks right now, my friends are offering up free mask making kits, see below. In the meantime, sending big 💕 love 💕 to all, especially .

All hands on deck! With the growing shortage of masks for medical professionals and essential workers, we have teamed up to create a mask 101 package for any sewers who have time and skills to volunteer. For pre-cut materials, instructions, patterns, and distribution information, reach out to [email protected].

How to keep your toddler occupied for 15 minutes: shaving cream! I’ve seen a bunch of elaborate shaving cream craft ideas online, including some lovely marbled paper eggs made from swirls of multicolored shaving cream squeegeed off from paper, but sometimes you want a quick and easy game. Shaving cream in cupcake tins, food dye optional, let them at it. Pretty easy cleanup if you have a dropcloth.
