On days where the lighting is a little flat, beauty dishes can be great for adding an instant pop to your portraits. Since I was using the Impact 28” Folding Beauty Dish (most traditional BD’s are smaller), I was able to position it slightly further back to get a more even coverage.

If there’s a focal length I love for headshots, it’s definitely 135mm. The compression flatters (most) people’s faces and the bokeh brings the focus entirely onto your subject.

The lighting here is pretty simple - I exposed for the background and used a Speedlite + umbrella setup to fill in the shadows a bit on the left side while introducing subtle catchlights.

If you could have just one modifier that’s your go-to, what would that be? For me, I’m a big fan of 7-foot parabolic umbrellas (as long as you don’t mind a lot of light spill, and your shooting space isn’t a NYC bedroom)!
