"Temporarily Osed"
Riverside Theater, Upper West Side, 1976
© 2022, David J. Bookbinder
Demolition of this building, once home to a magnificent 1,700-seat live theater, halted when the developer ran out of money, leaving the façade and the wall facing 96th Street still standing, unsupported by the rest of the block-sized structure.
A few weeks later, the south wall collapsed in the middle of the night, crushing the line of cars parked alongside it and injuring two people hit by flying bricks.
Now, this block is very upscale, but back then it was one of the rougher parts of Manhattan.
