The Block Jax is finally opening its doors this weekend and it’s ABSOLUTELY worth the hype!

The long-awaited 2-floor outdoor food hall on the Southside (near IKEA / Town Center area) is opening its doors and will be my reason for making a trip over from the urban core, if not for the food vendors like Chancho King and the Hungry Owl, alone.

9 LOCAL food and beverage vendors, multiple bars, a Kanine Social dog park, built-in kids play area, a stage / entertainment area and the second floor dedicated to the 21+ crowd! *Note - it is a cashless establishment.

(The pictures in the slides are just a few I had a chance to capture during a preview night.)

Grand opening weekend lineup :
- Fri | March 20th - 12pm–2pm — Acoustic set by Joe Nash | 6:30pm–9:30pm — The Band Be Easy
- Sat | March 21st - 11am–5pm — Kids Entertainment | 12pm–2pm — Acoustic set by Emily Mikus | 6:30pm–9:30pm — The Red Magnolias
- Sun | 11am–5pm — Kids Entertainment | 12pm–3pm — DJ set by Disco Cowboy

In my opinion, the identity of any city is created by the people who interact with it, and when we began brainstorming how to celebrate 160 years of James Weldon Johnson Park, we unanimously agreed this was the sentiment to lead with.

We picked ten people who aren’t usually forward-facing or highlighted, but have deeply impacted our city by just existing and engaging with it. Barbara Colaciello interviewed each one and Toni Smailagic photographed them - and that exhibit can now be seen at the Jessie in Downtown Jacksonville, or online (link in bio!

These are just a few examples of who to expect & what kind of stories are shared. The exhibit was produced by Friends of James Weldon Johnson Park and the Jessie Ball duPont Center.

At first, I was excited / / Dream Market was activating Laura st for Art Walk, but then I found out that my childhood was being used as a manipulation tactic to get me there (the parachute!) and knew I had to bring the camera to grab a few pictures. 😭🥹I really couldn’t have asked for a better evening!

* Art Walk is the first Wednesday of every month.
* Sip & Stroll every third Thursday

‘Swamp Soirée’ is old Florida after dark — Spanish moss, roadside oddities & citrus-grove glamour. Think more Everglades and less Miami Beach.

We asked three Jacksonville staples to interpret Swamp Soiree, which is this year’s theme for the gala;
& even discussed dressing like a can of bug spray, only to remind you that however YOU interpret the theme is correct!

The gala is known to draw in the most interesting groups of people (especially creatives) & a reason to step outside of your comfort zone. If you feel stuck, here are just a few examples to help you out :

* Textures like velvet, satin, sequins, fringe & crochet
* Swampy/citrus palette (olive, moss, brown, orange)
* 50’s to 70’s Florida
* Or just come in a classic gown/suit and have a good time!

The 11th Annual DTJax Gala is Friday, Feb 27, 6–10 p.m. at Venue 841, and it’s raising funds for PlacemakingJax Presented by — the initiative behind community-driven activations that bring Downtown to life. Tickets include open bar, food, live music and photo ops.

I’ll see you there! Don’t forget, only the boring get bored 🖖

We asked 3 Jacksonville staples to interpret Swamp Soiree, which is this year’s theme for the gala;
Some of what & discussed was dressing like a plant, or going as a coordinated green group, which are perfect interpretations, but those are just their interpretations. This is to remind you that however YOU interpret the theme is correct!

This Monday! January 19th, from 11am to 2pm, the MLK Day Parade is taking place in Downtown Jacksonville. Starting at Lot E by EverBank Stadium, up Bay Street (direction towards the Landing), & making a right on Market St. before returning.

I realized I never posted the pictures I took last year,so here are just a few faces I captured. It’s my personal favorite parade to cover and serves as a brief reminder of how much of a positive impact observing and being a part of community can have in times of uncertainty.

I’ll see you there 📸🖖

Tonight!

Downtown Jacksonville’s Sip & Stroll takes place every Third Thursday, and this marks the final one of the year! Taking place on the Southbank Riverwalk from 5-8pm.

Free to attend, all ages. Food, music, drinks, & COMMUNITY.

The easiest point of reference of where to start is Friendship Fountain 🤗

Huge thank you to & on the interview segment with 🫶
