10am in New York. Bright sun, hard shadows, and no intention of waiting for perfect light.

I used an ND filter to bring the exposure under control and worked with the sunlight instead of fighting it. The goal was to keep the strength of the morning light while still making her the focus against that incredible Brooklyn backdrop.

Sometimes difficult light gives you exactly the character the photograph needs.

One of the last songs written for Stranded In Hell became the first chapter of the journey.

ONE FOOT IN HELL

What started from an old-school death metal feeling behind the drums eventually grew into something that brought together influences from different parts of my musical life.

And when the song needed a guitar voice, I knew exactly who to call: my good friend Juancho Gómez of Masacre, whose playing brought the aggression and personality the track needed.

Ashley at Pier 76, NYC.

Photographing in bright daylight by the water can be tricky; the background was considerably brighter than my subject, so I used flash to bring Ashley up to the exposure of the environment while still keeping the image feeling natural.

And when you’re photographing a musician, the instrument is part of the portrait. Ashley is a phenomenal bass player, and I wanted these images to feel like her: confident, strong, and completely connected to her instrument.

Sometimes flash isn’t about creating dramatic light. It’s simply about finding the right balance between your subject and everything happening behind them.
