The beginning of 3 new pieces. Oh, how I long to escape into the wilderness away from all the suffering man has made. Alas, I shall instead probe our American nightmares.

I love this painting. I don't even remember how long ago I started it but today it is done. I feel like this is one you have to see in person 🩷

It brings me an instant state of serenity. Perhaps it is the balance of light and dark, or that you have to look for the details. Whatever it is, this painting casts a beautiful spell.

I need to come up with a good title ☺️

I hung two new paintings on the studio wall today for Open Canopy tomorrow. Here is a close-up of a diptych I started on June 24, 2022. I will remind you of the significance of this date, which was the day some 170 million women lost their reproductive rights in the United States when the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. This piece is titled Rise Up. Ladies I see you ❤️🔥 Never give up!

Still I Rise
by Maya Angelou

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
’Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

Wow! I officially sold a beloved painting yesterday ❤️ I am so thankful that it found such a beautiful and compassionate guardian. I hope it enriches your life and inspires you always and forever.

Pouring your heart into something and letting it go out into the world is an emotional, rewarding, and exhilarating experience. The piece pictured here is called “Through the Veil”, it marks a radical shift in how I view the creative process and the intention I choose when I begin new works. It freed me from conventional methods and taught me to own my power as a creator. This piece is about love; it is about parting the veil and having an experience with something greater than ourselves. I believe we give a little piece of our heart and soul to what we create. I feel so lucky to encounter beautiful people in this world who are moved and inspired by what I bring to the world. Today there is a new space for me to take all of my experiences, all of my creative power, and begin anew.

To all of my friends, family, collectors, and art lovers out there, thank you for seeing me.

Looking back as I move forward with new work. This is one of my favorite mixed media collages. The background was painted using oil paint and the woman is single cut out from a magazine from many years ago. I love how simple and profound it feels. I can't tell if she is rising, falling, or floating in place; it usually depends on my state of mind and mood. Whatever her state, I love this piece.
