Photo by : And just like that, the other half of The Married Travelers is going on the first of his (many) business trips for 2022. We always dine out at one of our fave restaurants the night before—for just in case. Because if s**z happens to either of us while we’re apart, at least we got to have a wonderful last meal together. I actually love this little tradition of ours, even if it sounds a bit morbid. Here I was wearing a brand new cardigan I had just finished knitting last weekend.

Photo by : Do you know New York City has the largest Ukrainian community outside of Ukraine? I didn’t. Here’s what I wrote on my personal Facebook on June 20, 2015, just one year before this little local Eastern European institution permanently closed its doors.

“Markian is the third generation shopkeeper at Surma, a store started by his grandfather in 1918. There were pictures of his grandfather standing behind the counter, and of his father posing in front of the store. I asked Markian why there were no pictures of him, and he replied a lot of customers said the same thing, too. While paying for my purchase (got some cute Ukranian-made merchandise and a jar of local fall honey), I told him he had two minutes to decide to have his portrait taken by a ‘great photographer’. 😁”

On a related note, thinking of my own brother-in-law, his parents, and everyone in Ukraine—and beyond, who are deeply affected by this senseless war. Please donate if you’re able to.
