I rarely buy cut flowers but I will occasionally treat myself to a blooming plant. Orchids top my list as a favorite because, with a little care, they will re-bloom.

Keep yours going too:
Perch the plant in a window with bright indirect light. Water weekly. Once it finishes flowering, fertilize once a month until the blooms return.

Coreopsis, also known as tickseed, is native to most of the United States and is popular for pollinator and wildlife gardens because they’re a larval plant for butterflies and support their nectar needs.

They prefer moist sandy soils of the prairies and plains but will grow well in many types of soil including human-disturbed areas like roadsides.

They’re easy growing habits and resistance to insect issues makes them a great addition to any area of your yard or garden.

This popular landscaping shrub has caught my eye on more than one occasion- like the one pictured here in a recent rain The Country Club New Orleans - so I finally looked it up.

I believe it is: Podocarpus Macrophllus, with common names like Japanese Yew, Plum Pine, Ferm Pine and Buddhist Pint.

This unique small-medium sized ornamental evergreen conifer has many notable features including: hardiness in growing zones 7-11, adaptability to a number of gardening conditions, and has the structurally density that’s good for privacy hedges and bonsai to name a few.

I like a lot of things about this plant but what I dig most are their precious little red blue and green “berries” they put out. They’re just so pretty.

All you New Orleans fools that waxed poetic about fall because we had a brief respite from the heat advisory with one scant “cool” breeze: stop it. It’s not fall. You know damn well we have two more months of scathing heat and excruciatingly deep summer bad behavior 🌿
