In the first photo, you can see brother Shea Siraj (formerly Shea Pierre), photographed from the upstairs control room at Esplanade Studios. I called this photo Shea Channels Monk, for hopefully obvious reasons. But a couple of days ago I was at Louisiana Music Factory, and I saw the Thelonious Monk t shirt shown in the second slide and - holy hell!!! I couldn’t find the photo it was based on, but I did find a woodcut by - seen in slide three. Damn!!!

Even in a career - a lifetime, in fact - where I’ve been privileged beyond belief to be a creative partner with some of the world’s most monumental musical talents, this will stand as one of my crowning achievements: the cover, front and back, of an album by the legend that is Mr Cyril Neville. The album (Don’t Wait Til I’m Gone) dropped yesterday at the wonderful Louisiana Music Factory record store on Frenchmen Street, and Mr Cyril not only signed it, but gave me a new nickname to boot ☺️.

There’s a message in there too, obviously: be sure to give all the flowers to our friends and culture bearers while they’re still around. Don’t wait think they’re gone!

Much love to Miss Lyrica too for making this happen 🙌🏽📷🤎👍🏼.

Singer songwriter and actor Steve Earle (who had great character roles in two of my favorite TV shows - The Wire and Tremé), photographed after his Midnight Preserves set at Preservation Hall late late late on Sunday night. And he actually sang This City, an original ode to New Orleans he wrote for his Tremé character Harley to sing in the show ❤️👍🏼🤎🙌🏽.

Midnight Preserves - Day 8: and there it is. A bittersweet night. As we dragged our tired and weary asses home at 2:00am for the eight time in eleven days, we reflected on the fact that now we have to wait another year for our next go around. The fantastic last night featured Miss Erica Falls, Neal Francis and Steve Earle, and it closed out with an incendiary I Would Rather Go Blind sung by Pres Hall’s own sax maestro The Ragin’ Cajun Clint Maedgen. Until next year!
