"Lord I was born a ramblin' man
Trying to make a living
and doing the best I can

And when its time for leaving,
I hope you'll understand
That I was born a rambling man"

This collection of rural homes are often mistaken for homes from the antebellum era, but in reality, they were built in the 1920s for workers on an expansive pine farm in North Florida.

And while they haven't been occupied for many years, these homes have become a landmark for locals traveling the backroads near Micanopy, Florida.

I spent some time digging up the history of these homes and you can read it in the comments below....

✨I found this modest little house crumbling along a rural highway in Bryan County, Georgia.

Homes like this were once common across the South, often called “shotgun houses” because, as the saying goes, you could fire a shotgun through the front door and the shot would pass straight out the back.

In truth, the design was practical: the straight floor plan allowed air to flow from front to back, creating a natural kind of air-conditioning in the Southern heat.

✨This house in Caswell County, North Carolina, was built in the early 1900s.

In its current state, it’s hard to consider this was once a cherished family home, as time, weather, and neglect have taken their toll, but I like to try to imagine what it looked like when it was brand new, with a fresh coat of paint.

🪽 “There was an angel band in heaven
That was not quite complete
So God called our darling Ida
To fill the vacant seat.” 👼🏻

I’d like to share the story of Ida Lane, my great aunt.

This small headstone rests in my family cemetery in Clay County, Florida. Ida was named after her mother, my great-grandmother Ida Lane, who tragically passed away during childbirth. The baby girl was given her mother’s name in her honor, but heartbreak followed again when little Ida lived only a few months.

Our family placed this beautiful marker at her grave, carved with the tender poem that became her epitaph. Today, her resting place sits beside my own mother’s marker, and each time I visit, I have the chance not only to grieve my mom, but also to reflect on the generations of my family who have been connected to this part of Florida.

✨Before it became a ghost town, Old Cahawba was Alabama’s first capital- a thriving river settlement built atop ancient Native American lands. In this article, I dive into the the story of one of the historic structures that still stands in the ghost town- the Barker-Kirkpatrick House, which was originally built as housing for enslaved individuals.

✨What year do you think this photograph was taken?

Captured in this photograph are John and Mary Mason Rosier of Hawthorne, Florida. This portrait came with very few details. It only mentioned their names and that they were married in 1902. But it left me wondering, who were they? What were their lives like?

I'm sharing this in hopes that it might reach a descendant who can share their story. Or perhaps, one of the talented genealogists who follows this page might be able to shed some light on their lives in early 20th-century Florida.

If you have any details about this couple, please share with us!
