A herd of American Bison staring back at me!

The shaggy, peeling fur on their bodies indicates they are molting or shedding their thick winter coats for the warmer months. Bison can be highly dangerous and aggressive if you get too close. While they generally prefer to flee or graze peacefully rather than attack, they are wild, unpredictable animals. Bison often appear slow or lethargic while grazing but they are incredibly agile and can burst into a sprint up to 35 mph and easily outrun humans.

A green heron crouched down in its hunting position. A green heron is a small, stocky wading bird with a thick neck and a sharp, dagger-like bill. Its has a dark, iridescent greenish-black cap and patterned wing feathers with a rich brownish-chestnut neck. Its eyes are a bright yellow iris surrounding a dark pupil. If you look closely, you can see the dragonfly in its mouth.

The green heron is one of the very few bird species globally documented using tools to hunt. This highly intelligent behavior, known as bait-fishing. The bird drops an object like a stick or flower onto the surface of the water or on a lily pad directly in front of its fishing perch and then sits quietly waiting for small fish to inspect or a dragonfly to land.

A beautiful African lily or "Flower of Love". The scientific name is Agapanthus. The genus name comes from the Greek words agape (love) and anthos (flower). Because of its romantic name and symbolism, it is a popular choice for bridal bouquets and wedding decorations. Native to South Africa, Agapanthus has been valued as a magical and medicinal plant since ancient times. Prized as a love charm, the plant was believed to be a powerful aphrodisiac. The vibrant blooms attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.

A Golden Swamp Warbler perched against a tree. The warbler songbird is often found in swampy woodlands, bottomland forests, and near water where they nest in tree cavities. It is the only eastern warbler that builds its nests inside enclosed tree cavities rather than open branches. Because they cannot excavate holes themselves, they rely on old woodpecker or chickadee holes, natural tree hollows, and human-made nest boxes.

This Anhinga was perched on top of this little tree that stood alone in the waters of Lake Martin. As soon as my kayak got too close he took flight. Apparently he was not into taking pictures today. Must be a teenage bird.....

Speckled king snake coming right at my lens!
They are a non-venomous snake and highly beneficial to have around. They eat rodents and other snakes—including venomous species like copperheads and rattlesnakes, against whose venom they possess a natural immunity. They are commonly found in moist areas and near swamps or river valleys.
