NocturnalLedge

NocturnalLedge Astrophotography tutorials from a Bortle 5 backyard in Middle Tennessee. Real gear, real mistakes, real results. The goal isn’t hype or perfection.

Teaching the full path from first light to finished image — because nobody should have to piece it together from a dozen sources. I’m Nate, the photographer behind NocturnalLedge. NocturnalLedge is a long-term astrophotography project centered on capturing the night sky as it actually is—not just the final image, but everything it takes to get there. I focus on planetary imaging, deep-sky targets,

and the decisions that shape each result: equipment choices, weather, seeing, processing tradeoffs, and patience. This page documents real sessions under real skies. Some nights succeed, some don’t—but every one teaches something worth sharing. It’s clarity, craftsmanship, and steady progress. If you’re curious about astrophotography, refining your workflow, or simply enjoy seeing what’s possible from the backyard with discipline and time, you’re in the right place.

The weather around here has not been kind to telescope owners lately, but the skies finally broke open, and I was back out collecting more integration time on M51.

The Whirlpool Galaxy was the very first target I ever imaged when I started out, so this one feels personal. I can’t wait to compare where I was then to where I am now.

This is shaping up to be a serious dataset. I’ve been collecting across April, May, and now June, blending broadband and Hα for a multi-night combination that I think is going to be something special. Stay tuned, because there are still two more good nights projected this week.

I haven’t gone dark, I promise! Terrible imaging weather has persisted… January 15th was my last imaging night. This is the longest stretch I’ve gone without setting up since I started this journey.

The sky doesn’t owe us anything. When it opens again, I’ll be ready!!

Until then, I wish you clear skies!!

The last couple weeks haven’t been kind to imaging due to ice, clouds, and a lot of waiting.

Sometimes all you get is a quiet moment, the Moon, and frozen trees.

And honestly, that’s enough.

Tonight was one of those sessions where patience actually paid off.

Above-average seeing, average transparency, and a lot of restraint at the capture and processing stages. This Jupiter image came from a .SER capture, stacked in AutoStakkert and carefully processed in RegiStax — stopping before things started to look artificial.

Planetary imaging has taught me this more than anything:
good results usually come from knowing when not to push.

Seeing matters. Timing matters. And sometimes the biggest improvement is learning when to stop tweaking and let the data speak.

Still learning. Still refining. But nights like this make the process feel worth it.

Clear skies 🌙🔭

Jupiter and Io transit under the Wolf Moon 🌕

Captured tonight during a quiet observing session that stretched past midnight.

Io moving across Jupiter’s face, with the Great Red Spot rotating into view later in the night.

Full Moon nearby, seeing coming and going — not perfect conditions, but still a reminder that these systems are always in motion if you take the time to watch.

Sometimes the work is just showing up, sitting with it, and letting time do what it does.
