I'm excited to say that www.joshuagull.com is officially live again! I stepped away from professional photography on a sabbatical of sorts over the last couple of years, but I've felt a strong calling to return for a while now. Being able to use my camera to document such important memories for such amazing couples isn't something that's easy to shake, and I can't wait to do just that for so many more couples next year and beyond!

It's been quite a while since I've posted a Joshua Gull Photography update. In the 16 years that photography has been a part of my life--the last 7 of which have been under the umbrella of a professional business--it's played many roles. What started as a high school hobby became an editorial side business and grew into a fully fledged labor of love documenting the raw emotions of the happiest day in people's lives.

Through all of that, one constant has remained, and that constant is change.

Photography, for me, has been ever-evolving, and that's no different now. If you've noticed that things have been quiet with my photography business lately, it's because I've been on a sabbatical of sorts to focus on life.

Through this time away from my business it's helped me to realize that in this season of life I need to continue to focus on life rather than business. As such, I will no longer be accepting wedding commissions through Joshua Gull Photography. Operating a successful wedding photography business requires an incredible level of attention and dedication along with working odd hours/days, and while I've always been up for that task personally, my prioritizes have slowly shifted over the last few years since becoming a parent.

It's been an incredible journey capturing the memories of all the couples I've worked with--many of which I'm blessed to call lifelong friends--and I wanted to take a moment to thank each couple that entrusted me with the honor of documenting their wedding day as well as every person that's supported me in my business along the way (of which there are too many to name, you know who you are).

I've always looked at change as an opportunity for growth, and I'm excited to see what the future holds. In the meantime, this page will stay up but my wedding photography website at www.joshuagull.com will be archived for the time being. This, however, is hardly the end of my photographic journey. If you wish to follow along, the most updated content will be posted to my Instagram account at https://www.instagram.com/joshuagull/ where you'll see personal stuff, my weekly submissions for our family documentary collective at http://www.familyofphotographers.com/ (which has become a passion project of mine), any content shared from my work with The Black & White Collective (http://www.blackandwhitecollective.com/ or https://www.instagram.com/theblackandwhitecollective/ for more information) and whatever else is yet to come. Here's to new more new beginnings!

All the best,
Josh

If you're wondering why things have been a little quiet over here, it's because big things have been in the works. Over a year ago my friend and fellow photographer, Kristin Sweeting, approached me with an idea that I was head over heels with, and today we officially launched the site!

You've probably noticed my affinity for black and white photography. It lights a fire inside of me because of the way it puts such an emphasis on the moments and emotions of an image. When it comes to documenting life, there isn't a better medium in my book.

I couldn't be more happy to be a part of something that strikes such a chord with me and that will provide such powerful, timeless memories for the couples we're so fortunate enough to work with going forward.

Kristin, Rebecca and I are so excited to present the Black + White Collective.

Weekly Wedding Tip: Don't be afraid to break tradition. Rules are meant to be broken. It's your wedding day. Don't try to make it fit someone else's expectations.

This week's tip was inspired by HuffPost's article on mismatched bridesmaids dresses and how great they can look. http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/55ba7745e4b0d4f33a01f8ca?ir=Weddings

But it's bigger than dresses (because matching dresses can look great too). It applies to everything about your wedding day. And it doesn't apply only to tradition--it also applies to Pinterest and the wedding blogs. Your wedding can be as informal and simple or as extravagant and detailed as anyone could imagine. So long as it's authentic to you, that's what's is really important.

In case you haven't heard, the days of mandatory bridesmaids uniforms -- the same boring dress in the same drab color -- are over. And what a relief it is! More and more brides are letting their 'maids

Weekly Wedding Tip: This one is for the guys. Summer heat is here and it can be pretty brutal. On your wedding day you're likely going to be in more layers than you would normally be for this kind of heat, and you're expected to be liking your best. I want to help.

A year ago I was getting desperate to find wedding-appropriate clothing that didn't cause me to overheat or look like a mess an hour into the wedding day, and I noticed grooms were having the ask problem.

I decided to give a small clothing company out of Boston, MA called Ministry of Supply a shot. They touted clothing infused with aerospace technology to keep you cool while looking great. Fast forward a year later and I will not shoot weddings in anything else but my Apollo or Archive dress shirts and my Aero dress pants or Aviator chinos. These products are a huge step up from standard moisture wicking materials like Under Armor and lightyears better than traditional materials. They're even offering jackets now too if you want a full suit look, and their customer service is so exceptional that they've refunded tailoring bills if the stock sizes they offer aren't a perfect fit for you. Next level products and customer service. Win-win.

This isn't an ad and I'm in no way affiliated with Ministry of Supply, but to say I'm impressed with this company would be a major understatement. When you have to be out in the heat and look good at the same time, products like these are game-changers. I feel like it would be a disservice not to mention it to all the grooms I work with. So if you're getting married this summer and you want to look good while also being comfortable, look into Ministry of Supply. They're doing great things for guys like us.

Weekly Wedding Tip: A lot of ceremonies I photograph are outdoors, and even if they aren't the couple often wants portraits outdoors. I'm all for that. Beautiful, natural light is hard to beat. But what happens when it rains on your wedding day?

Embrace it.

That's right, embrace it. Clear canopy umbrellas for you, your wedding party and even guests are an option, but definitely have at least one on hand if rain looks likely on your wedding day for yourself. Not only will it keep you dry "just in case" but it makes for great photo opportunities too.

This is also a good reminder to keep a well-padded timeline so we can work around showers if necessary.

Luckily here in Tennessee it rarely rains all day, so if the forecast shows rain for your wedding day, grab an umbrella and don't sweat it. It's still going to be a beautiful day and I'm still going to get beautiful photos for you. We'll work around the showers. ;)

Weekly Wedding Tip: Grooms, your bride is going to be stunning on your wedding day. You're probably going to go weak in the knees when you see her for the first time, whether that be when she comes down the aisle or if you do a first look.

You should want to look top notch for her as well.

Skip the never-fits-quite-right rental. Buy yourself a quality suit or tux and have it tailored to fit you. And while you're at it get a good pair of dress shoes as well. Not only will it help you to look your best for your bride on the wedding day, it'll look a LOT better in photographs, and it's something that you can actually use and wear on future occasions as well.

For suits, you can't go wrong with J Crew, Banana Republic or Indochino for starters. They're all great places to get a quality suit.

If you're getting married during hotter months, check out Ministry of Supply for a modern dress shirt that gives you some stretch and room to move while keeping you cooler than typical shirts.

For shoes look at Allen Edmonds or Alden for something really classy. Johnston and Murphy makes some great dress shoes as well. And if you want some cushioning, check into the Cole Haan offerings that have the Nike Air system.

Last but certainly not least, don't forget the details. Get a nice tie or bow tie (not the clip on kind--I can help you tie it if you need a hand) and a complimentary pocket square for a little extra panache. Remember that your belt should be the same general color as your shoes. And a classy watch can be a nice touch as well.

And encourage your groomsmen to do the same. For the price of a decent rental you can be halfway to a much nicer look that you won't have to take back to the store the next day.

Sharing beautiful work is great, but photography is only a small part of the bigger picture of your wedding day. I realize that most couples don't get married every weekend and aren't experts on weddings, so I'm going to start sharing weekly tips for your wedding day that will not only lead to better photographs but a better wedding day experience. It's been a great year. Facebook has throttled the reach of business pages down so much that only a small percentage of fans see updates, and as a result I've been lax about posting nearly as much here. Perhaps a New Years Resolution to fix that is in order. In the meantime, you guys can follow along with some of my favorite photos from 2014 with my Year In Review. More details at http://joshuagull.com/nashville-wedding-photography-2014/ or you can follow along directly at http://instagram.com/joshuagull

It’s been a good year. It’s been a busy year. I’ve been lucky enough to see beautiful places, work with amazing couples and witness incredible things. I have a lot of stories I can’t wait to share those stories here over the next few months.
