A rejected calf in the Gobi is a countdown rather than an inconvenience, because a newborn camel that cannot nurse has very little time, and a mother that has refused it after a hard birth will not be argued out of the position by force. Herders across Mongolia have known this for a long time, and the answer they arrived at is one of the stranger pieces of practical animal husbandry anywhere in the world.

The ritual is called Hoos, and it begins with an instrument rather than a rope. A herder brings out the morin khuur, the two stringed horsehead fiddle at the center of Mongolian music, and plays a slow and unmistakably mournful melody standing near the mother and her calf, frequently accompanied by a woman singing a long, drawn out line over the top of it. Nobody rushes the process, and the playing continues for as long as the animal needs.

What happens next is documented well enough that film crews have captured it. The mother's agitation drains away over the course of the music, and she begins by sniffing the calf she had been driving off, then starts licking it, and eventually lowers her head and stands still long enough for the newborn to feed. Herders commonly describe seeing tears on the mother's face while the fiddle plays, though researchers are careful to say that camel tear production cannot be read as human style emotion and may simply be a physiological response.

The practice reached audiences far outside Mongolia through The Story of the Weeping Camel, an Oscar nominated documentary from 2003 that filmed a herding family carrying out the ritual with a white calf its mother had refused. Nothing in the method involves restraint or coercion of any kind, which is the detail that tends to stay with people, since the entire technique amounts to patience, proximity, and a piece of music old enough that nobody remembers writing it.
