Hi all! I created this page to make it easier to cross post on Facebook and Instagram. It hasn't worked. In fact, it has created more work. Many of my photos won't post on Instagram because all of the photos in a post must be the same orientation and aspect ratio (or within a range). Many of mine are not for artistic reasons, and I refuse to crop them per their requirements, so they are left out. Neither site allows me to post captions on my photos, which I like to do. I can only do that on my personal page. Sometimes, I think you need a little additional information.

Also, things I post on this page won't transfer to my personal page. They must be reposted, creating needless additional work. So, for that reason, I'm not going to post on this page any longer (unless I find a special need for it). Thanks to the many of you who followed this page. If you enjoy my content, it will continue to be on my personal page. If we're not Facebook friends (my personal account) or you don't follow me there, please send me a friend request or just follow that page, https://facebook.com/surfingator1. I appologize for the inconvenience.

Between visits by Mom quetzal, we had a few small birds drop by for a visit. Among them was the Flame-throated Warbler and the Collared Whitestart.

After a while, the quetzal disappeared, so we went to a local restaurant for lunch. Before and after lunch, we photographed hummingbirds and our first acorn woodpecker. The fourth photo was a first for me - a hummingbird snagging a bug out of the air! Just before we left it started raining and the fog rolled in giviing a really dreamy background to the photos.

On Day 3, we headed to the cloud forest in search of the Resplendent Quetzel. These beautiful birds are the emerald jewels of the high altitude cloud forest. Quetzals were important symbols to the Mayans and Aztecs and the name comes from the Aztec word quetzalli for the tail-feathers they used ceremonially. Don't worry, these birds were revered and protected by both civilizations. They just plucked the feathers they needed and let the birds go.

The best time to see them is during breeding season and we arrived right at the end of the season. On the previous day, one of the chicks fledged and the father left with it to care and feed it. Fortunately for us, the other chick was still in the nest and we were able to photograph the mother feeding it. You'll notice that mom is feeding the chick wild avocados.

Pam and I just returned from a fantastic two-week trip to Costa Rica with Carolyn Lagarenne and Walter (WR Lagarenne). We had the best guide in Costa Rica, Dennis Valverde, thanks to the recommendation from David Archer.
We started our trip at Hotel Bougainvillea in San Jose. We spent our first two days there at the 10-acre on-site botanical gardens. (thanks to Norm Grant for the recommendation)! It was really nice to roll out of bed, stroll the garden, photograph the birds and then come in for a great breakfast - all without leaving the property. This first post shows some of the birds and critters we saw there. Don't worry, monkeys, frogs, snakes and more birds are coming. Some of my photos and none of the text didn't post. If you want to see it, please go to my personal page.

I guess I can't include my comments for each picture, so if you want to see those, you'll have to go to my personal page. Instagram won't let me post different size photos, so a few will be missing there. And I thought this was going to be easier!

We were lucky today to be able watch the Blue Angels practicing for this weekend's air show. They were buzzing over our house for several hours. Planes 1-6 are flown by a single pilot. #7 was a 2-seater, flown by Lt. Ronny Hafeza and Cdr Lilly Montana (the only lady in the group). For you Auburn fans, she's a Tiger (War Eagle). By the way, there was an eagle flying around and over the SC Port during the practice. I guess he knew she was there.

They say that the early bird gets the worm (or caterpillar, in this case). The Prothonotary warbler or "swamp canary" is South Carolina's new official state migratory bird.

If you were looking for a mate in the light dappled recesses of a dark cypress swamp, I'm sure you'd be attracted to this Yellow-crowned night heron. Nothing says "I love you" like a set of bloodshot red eyes.

You almost don't even notice this nondescript little brown killdeer hopping around in the mud, but when he takes flight, it's a different story. His wing markings are striking and that orange tail really pops. They're very fast, acrobatic fliers.

Here's a few images of an American Kestral taken on my last visit to Orlando Wetlands in November, 2025. He's America's most beautiful and colorful little falcon. They're usually very skittish, but this one let me get a little closer than normal, so I spent quite a bit of time with him. He would perch on various dead tree tops and when he spotted an insect, he would take off and sn**ch them from their perch on the leaves of nearby trees. Fortunately for me, he'd bring them back to eat.
