But somewhere along the way, I realized the part I love most isn’t always the 8 seconds.

It’s the waiting behind the chutes. The dust hanging after a ride. The people who run in when everyone else runs out. The little cowboys watching from the rail. The light hitting an arena just right.

That’s probably my favorite thing about practice nights — no production, no perfect setup, just good bulls, talented riders, bullfighters who don’t hesitate to step in the chaos, and a whole lot happening in a fraction of a second

Morgan High School Rodeo Club 🤠💜

A little different pace from the arena, but still some of my favorite people to have in front of my camera.

There’s something pretty special about getting to photograph the kids who make up our hometown rodeo community — and having my own boys mixed in there makes this set mean a little more to me.

Maybe being a photographer is just learning to notice ⤵️

The hands getting ready.
The nerves before the gate.
The laugh nobody posed for.
The dust hanging in the light.
The few quiet seconds before everything gets loud.

Of course I want the 8-second shot..

But some of my favorite frames happen when nobody realizes there’s a camera pointed their way.

Tell me I’m not the only one who loves these moments more than the “perfect” shot sometimes?! 📸

There’s a whole lot more to rodeo than the 8 seconds everyone sees. And that’s exactly why I love photographing it. 📸

So someday, when these really are the “good old days,” we have something to take us right back to them.

The horses. The people. The places. The little moments we didn’t know we’d miss yet.
