A Cosmetologist’s Hands - Part 2
This story is told by the woman behind the hands.
It began with necessity. A single mother, needing a way to provide for her children. She chose beauty school – not knowing yet if it would become her calling.
The training was hands-on and demanding. She wasn’t sure at first. Clients took time. Patience had to be learned – earned – one appointment at a time.
When asked what pushed her the hardest, physically and mentally, she doesn’t hesitate. “Hair cutting,” she says. “Every head is a different shape – and it’s the first thing people notice.”
The greatest challenge came later: opening her own business. Becoming not just a stylist, but a leader. Managing employees. Holding standards. Making sure people were treated with care and respect.
For young people, considering this trade today, her advice is honest: “You have to wear a lot of different faces and deal with all kinds of personalities. It can be mentally draining as well as physical. You have to be good with people.”
And when she looks at her hands now, after all the years and all the hard work, they tell her this: “I’ve touched a lot of hearts. I’ve helped families heal. I’ve built a close family. My hands have touched more hearts and families than hair.”
