On very cold pre-hatching nights, the male will press his body against the cavity entrance from the outside, blocking wind and predators while the female incubates inside.
This behavior is uncommon and appears to be done by older, experienced males.

Did you know the Brown Pelican is one of only two pelican species in the world that plunge-dive? They spot fish from up to 60 feet in the air, fold their wings, and hit the water like a torpedo! It's an incredible display of skill and speed, and one of nature's great sights to witness.
​This magnificent bird is also a symbol of successful conservation, having recovered strongly since the banning of the pesticide DDT. What's the most majestic bird you've ever seen?

Caught this pelican mid-stretch this morning — unbothered, balanced, and taking up space unapologetically.

Before cities and highways, elk roamed nearly all of North America — from the Carolinas to California. Massive herds once moved through open plains and forests that are now neighborhoods and farmland.

They’re still travelers. Some herds migrate hundreds of miles each year, following the same paths passed down from mother to calf for generations.

At night, their eyes reflect a blue-green glow caused by a special layer behind the retina that helps them see in low light.

When resting, elk often face into the wind — a natural defense that lets them smell approaching predators before they’re near. Even their stillness has purpose.
