Hey I’m Colter 👋

I’ve been doing film production work for over 10 years now and have rarely put myself in front of the camera, so I thought it was time I started by introducing myself.

If you’re an old follower, this might be redundant info, but hello to all those new people following my work and journey. Thanks for joining the ride 🤝

No one will call you out when you skip the early start, delay the work, or choose comfort over progress. From the outside, everything still looks fine.

But you know.

You know when you’re avoiding the hard thing.
You know when you’ve stopped growing.
You know when the small promises to yourself start to slide.

That’s what integrity really is. Not the big moments people see, but doing what you said you’d do when no one is watching, clapping, or keeping you accountable.

That quiet disappointment doesn’t disappear. It compounds. So does discipline. So does self-respect.

Every time you keep your word to yourself, you build trust with the one person who sees everything.

Show up anyway. Keep your word. Protect your integrity.

That’s where real progress starts. 🤝

I’m 34, I’ve been a video producer for over 10 years, and I’m embarrassed to admit...
1. I chose to stay in Montana to do this work, and a lot of the time it feels like I’m building without a map. Some days I wonder if I’m doing it wrong.
2. I’ve spent years trying to prove myself to people who weren’t even watching. Imposter syndrome has stuck with me longer than I like to admit.
3. Some of my biggest work over the last five years is with nonprofits and education grants, and I can’t share any of it. Meanwhile, I scroll past other creators posting their wins, and I feel like I’m falling behind, even though the work is some of the best I’ve ever done.
4. For a long time, I felt like I had to earn my place. Even now, I sometimes struggle to believe in my work.
5. I’ve been going to therapy because the pressure I put on myself was starting to affect everything else in my life.
6. I’m proud of the hip hop community I’ve helped build, but part of me still thinks it’s too good to be true.
7. And honestly, part of me wonders if my voice deserves to be heard at all. But I figure if I needed to hear this when I was starting out, someone else does too.

I’m sharing this because sometimes the work that matters most is the work nobody sees. If you feel like you’re building without a map, you’re not alone. Follow along. We’re doing this 1% at a time. 🤝

My intro to the film world was rejection. I didn’t get into film school my freshman year. A lot of people around me said, “I told you so.” and “That can’t be done in Montana as a career.” I could have agreed and stopped there, but I didn’t.

I used it as fuel.

Fuel to prove people wrong, to prove that this is something that I could do.

11 years later, I’m still in Montana, still building:
I’m still doing video production full time, and I’ve found an avenue that gave me purpose.

🎥 I get the opportunity to tell real stories where I’m at.
🎤 I’ve helped build a hip hop community in a state that has no infrastructure for it.
🤫 I get to work with nonprofits and grant teams to do real good in our local areas.

I’m never going to be the most talented, but you can’t take away my drive. None of it came from one big break. It came from years of showing up and getting 1% better.

I don’t need to prove anyone wrong anymore. I keep showing up and building a little each day.

If you’re a creative in a small town with no map, follow along because underdogs aren’t handed anything…We build it. 🤝

The power of perspective

One situation can lead to completely different results depending on how you choose to view it.

Sometimes the moments that feel like disappointments or setbacks are preparing you for what’s coming next.

Perspective changes everything.

Came for the bike ride, left with a bonus of clarity and peace of mind. 🚴‍♂️💜☺️

This summer beat me down. I was lost, fatigued, running on fumes. So I packed the bike up and headed south for a reset. Rode in Pocatello, then Salt Lake, but still searching for something. Then I got to Zion, and things started connecting and I could feel the energy coming back.

It hasn’t had its hiccups, there have been moments I wished I had someone next to me to share it with. But that same solitude gave me the space I needed to slow down, breathe, and actually think.

I’m about halfway through this trip, and for the first time in a while... I’ve got my spark back. I had the best ride I’ve had in a while today in Flagstaff. Excited to see where the rest of this road takes me. 🚵‍♂️🏜️
